What is Flutters of Hope?Flutters of Hope Inc is a non profit organization that helps individuals and families affected by eating disorders. Disordered eating can come in many forms and is one of the most under-diagnosed diseases in America. The outcome of an undiagnosed disorder can be lethal, however with treatment recovery can be full, complete, and rewarding. Treatment does not come cheap and most insurances will not cover the all-encompassing needs of the patient - enter Flutters of Hope. Why an Ultra as a fundraiser? Distance runners are often misdiagnosed or under-diagnosed as an eating disorder patient due to the demands of their sport. Data shows that 1 in 4 adult males have some form of an eating disorder and in the female population that is doubled to 1 in 2. It is a guarantee that you have toed the starting line with at least one person suffering. This is the 17th year of Going the Distance! This annual bike ride raises much needed funds to support the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro.
The pavement rides are 40, 60, or 75 miles in distance, supported by rest areas in Turners Falls and Greenfield as well as a support vehicle. These rides travel down Route 142 through Vernon and enters Massachusetts, continuing on beautiful country roads until the first rest stop in Turners Falls. From there the 40-mile riders return to Brattleboro, while those on the 60 & 75 mile rides continue through more gorgeous country roads, with the second rest stop along the Green River in Greenfield, MA where lunch is provided. The final leg of the ride brings you back to the Club, where a celebration awaits at our NEYT After Party!
We also have gravel routes available. The 26.8 mile and 38.7 mile Gravel and Gravel Plus routes through Dummerston and Putney offer outstanding riding on quiet New England back roads! With both rides starting and ending at the idyllic Rt. 30 covered bridge riders will immediately be immersed in a quintessential gravel ride.
The 38.7 mile Gravel Plus ride is not only the longer of the two offerings, but the tougher as well. With nearly 5,000 ft. of climbing (and descending!) over all possible terrain (Class IV roads, abandoned roads and single track...as well as loads of beautiful quiet back roads) this ride will challenge the strongest of riders. But don't get too scared -- it is all rideable on a good gravel bike. We recommend 35mm tires or larger.
The 26.8 mile Gravel ride offers much the same as the longer route, but it is shorter, has less climbing and there are no technical Class IV roads, abandoned roads and single track. If you have a bike with 35mm or larger tires suitable for quiet, beautiful tree lined back roads you are properly equipped. Just bring the lungs and legs to ride the mileage with nearly 2,975 ft. of elevation -- some hard but satisfying climbs (You did it!) and the always fun descents -- cruising down the most wonderful roads imaginable. Then the Gravel ride is for you!
E-bikes? Sure, bring the motor...we're not snobs! There will be plenty of riders probably wishing they had your e-bike...
Whether you see these rides as a piece of cake or you have doubts you can handle it, there will be support vehicles and a rest stop at Putney School with lunch and "carbs to carry" to fuel you and assist you.
After the ride take a dip in the West River to cool off and then head to NEYT on Flat Street for an awesome After Party!

Ride with a Purpose - All Proceeds go to Rare Disease Research and Advocacy
I started this endeavor twelve years ago as a passionate cyclist with a cause. Building community, Advocating for a cause, challenged with the parallels between gravel riding/ racing, walking the rare disease journey and educating myself and others, about childhood rare disease. I am not a charity but work directly with Vermont Rare, Rasopathies Network, CFC International amongst others to educate people on rare disease and finding ways to improve the lives of young people and families that live with a rare disease. So if you to are passionate about something, enjoy strong community and friends, do things with a purpose, love to ride and are excited about a new challenge, Vermont Rare Gravel might be the perfect fit!
“Have you ever been on a ride when the vibe and flow is just right? That was the feeling of the RAS Adventure Ride. With a great mix of classic Vermont dirt roads, limited amounts of tarmac and many challenging miles of off-road segments, you have all the elements of a classic dirt road event in the making. I hear that there will be even more off-road sections next year, so it’s only going to get better! Be sure to mark this event on your calendar for next year – you won’t want to miss it.”
"Thanks for another great RAS ride! It was my girlfriend's first travel event, and her longest ride ever! She survived and enjoyed it, even the crazy hill around mile 30!" ~2018 Participant
