Event Overview
Bicycle Illinois is proud to present our Ride Across Illinois (RAIL) event series! These fully supported ultra-distance cycling events will challenge you to push the limits of your
endurance by riding from one border of Illinois to the other in one day.
RAIL North will travel approximately 175 miles from Moline to Chicago, IL.
RAIL South will travel approximately 165 miles from St. Louis, MO to Vincennes, IN.
Even though the RAIL events can be extremely physically challenging, you will be fully supported the whole way. The encouragement you will receive from our staff, along with your fellow riders, will be energizing while the support will be inspiring! Many of the athletes you will be riding alongside with have never attempted this long of a distance before in one day and we can guarantee that no one will be alone on this new journey.
Because of this ride's difficulty level, we have designed the supporting ride logistics to help you reach this achievement. Both events are scheduled immediately before and after June 21^st (the longest day of the year) in order to give you the maximum amount of daylight to complete the ride – 15 hours! There's no need to be concerned about keeping up as you’ll only need to maintain an average riding pace around 12 mph to stay on track with the ride schedule.
Throughout the route, our staff will have snacks, ice water, and sports drinks available at predesignated rest stop locations. By utilizing these rest stops you can take a break, refuel, and focus on staying strong. The distance between each rest stop generally decreases throughout the day giving you the opportunity to take breaks more frequently as you become more fatigued. We know you got this!
Completing a RAIL event is a remarkable accomplishment, and we would like to give you recognition! At the end of the ride, all participants will receive an official “FINISHER” sticker to commemorate your achievement.
If you are up for the challenge, come join us on a RAIL event and claim your spot among a league of the best!
(Please note that RAIL rides are not appropriate for novice or inexperienced riders. We strongly recommend having at least completed a century ride of 100 miles or more before registering.)

Brian Galusha was born and raised in Eastern Iowa. After the army, he was a farmer in the area until he decided to devote himself to education and coaching. Over time, he coached baseball and football; he especially loved coaching track and cross country, as he was a marathon runner himself. He qualified twice for the Boston Marathon, and was a torch bearer for the 2002 Winter Olympics. In education, he fought for all students no matter the situation, and believed everyone should have the opportunity to better themselves. The funds from the Brian Galusha Memorial scholarship are being used in that spirit, going to students at the institutions he worked with, helping them to grow in their education.

This event is all about our
local Military and their families - they've all sacrificed so much for us. You don't have to run, you can walk, you can watch, you can cheer, you can sponsor and you can volunteer! However you decide to participate, you're going to have fun!
From the authentic Civil War Cannon used to start the race, to the "dog-tag" medals the real soldiers will place around your neck at the finish line, this unique event is "military" from start to finish. The WWII Army jeep as the pace car, the various military vehicles throughout the course, to the 100+ American flags along the course, the unique military themed tee shirts each participant will receive, the 'soldier statue' trophies, this event will be 100% military themed. We know you're in for a very special experience!
More than anything though, the Freedom Run presented by UnityPoint Heath is about our American Heroes in the Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force, and Navy – joining together in the spirit of camaraderie and community. It's a chance for the troops to extend the military 'esprit de corps' and civilians to thank them for their support by participating.
People run, walk, or roll in the Freedom Run for many different reasons. Some are trying to break records or achieve personal bests. Some come in memory of parents or grandparents who spent their careers in the military, or of loved ones who lost their lives in the line of duty. Many are honoring sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, or mothers and fathers who are in the military today. Others come to salute America's injured soldiers who participate in the 5K and demonstrate for all the true spirit of "soldiering on". And hundreds of others will come to simply thank the men and women of the US Forces for all they do at home and abroad.
Thank you for supporting our Military, for serving in our Military, and for helping our event show our appreciation through your participation.
Respectfully,
Joe
