🐍🍺 Welcome to the Annual Cottonmouth Beerlay! 🍺🐍
Run fast. Drink hard. Don’t get bit.
What do you get when you combine trail running, random beers, and your most competitive (and possibly least
coordinated) friends? The Cottonmouth Beerlay, baby! This wild race at the beautiful Lakewood Nature Preserve is back for another year of glorious chaos, beer-fueled miles, and unforgettable memories.
You can run it solo if you're a one-person party machine, or grab a few beer-loving buddies and tackle it as a relay team of 2–4. Either way, you're in for 8 miles of pure, ridiculous fun.
Are you fast enough to outrun the Cottonmouth? Or will the beer bite first?
🐾 How It Works:
Each lap is a 2-mile trail loop through the preserve. You’ll do it 4 times total.
Before every lap, runners must consume a randomly-selected beer from the BYOB community pool
Solo runners do it all themselves. Relay teams tag in one runner per lap.
🍻 21+ only for the drinking portion, of course. Minors and Sober folks may run with non-alcoholic alternatives but must be carbonated.
🧊 BYOB Russian Roulette (a Cottonmouth Classic)
Each runner brings 4 beers (5%+ ABV), which are tossed into our giant iced community kitty pool.
When it's your turn to run, a volunteer will hand you a mystery brew, already cracked and poured.
You drink it, you run it. Deal with the consequences.
No swapping. No peeking. No mercy.
Non Alcoholic Drinks are of course permitted. We love sobriety but we just haven't practiced it yet! 😂
🏆 Post-Race Beer Olympics
The party definitely doesn’t stop at the finish line.
Once everyone’s stumbled their final lap, we crank up the music, toss some pizza your way, and break out the Beer Olympics yard games:
🍻 Beer Pong
🪢 Tug of War
🔫 Dodgeball
🌽 Cornhole
🏌️♂️ Hillbilly Golf
🔄 Spike Ball

☀️ HELLO, MORTALS! IT’S ME… THE SUN.
And I’m callin’ you out to dance in my glow at the Longest Day—a race from sunrise to sunset on the trails of The Preserve at Lakewood. 🌅🏃♂️🌄 I’ll rise above the
horizon at 6:30AM sharp, and from then until I take my fiery bow around 10PM, you’ll be racing against me… and against time. ⏳🔥
Every 2-mile lap is your chance to shine. But beware—each lap gets one minute SHORTER to complete. My light fades, the clock ticks, and your legs better keep moving! Only the strongest will last 'til twilight… maybe one winner… or none at all. 😈🌞
🏞️ Welcome to My Playground:
The trails of The Preserve at Lakewood—120 acres of forest, rolling grass paths, and wildlife galore. While you're out chasing glory, don’t be surprised if a white-tailed deer or curious box turtle cheers you on. 🦌🐢🌳
You’ll loop past red cedars and maple trees, glide by singing mockingbirds and blue jays, and maybe catch a glimpse of a fox sneaking off to find shade. This is nature’s race course, and I light every inch of it.
🎯 Here’s the Deal:
🕕 Start: 6:30AM sharp—don’t be late, I wait for no one.
🔁 Format: 2-mile loop. First lap = 45 minutes to finish. Each lap after = 1 minute less to complete.
💀 Fall behind? Ring the cowbell of defeat and surrender your bib.
🏆 Lap 31: If you make it this far, first across the line wins the whole solar shebang.
🌟 Event Details:
📍 Where: 220 Lakewood Drive, Greenville, SC 29607
🎽 Packet Pickup: 1 hour before race start
🔥 Course: Grass trail with rolling hills, partial shade (you’re welcome), and big blue skies above

Just the raw Earth beneath your feet and some race-day snacks like:
🥒 Pickles | 🍪 Cookies | 🍬 Candy | 🥤 Water, Coke, & Ginger Ale
Cup-less, folks! Bring your own bottle or cup to sip from my table of sunshine. 🌞🥤
Wanna donate food? Bring your faves—I love a generous soul. 💛
🏕️ Make It a Party:
Bring your 10x10 tent, camp chair, and crew. Set up your home base beside the start/finish line and cheer on your fellow sun chasers! Just be kind—leave no trace and keep the energy high. 🎪🪑🎉We also offer Friday evening tent setup at 4pm along with overnight camping options you can reserve during registration.
So… are you bold enough to race from my rise to my fall?
Can you endure my longest day and stand tall in the golden hour?
Then I’ll see you at dawn, little firewalkers.
Bring your grit, your grit, and your sunscreen. 😎☀️🔥

The minimum for 2026 is 3 finishers for a team to be scored as part of the club competition.
You can add yourself to a team/club from your registration profile. A helpful link can be found HERE if you need to join an existing USAT club or create a new one for the race.

WHY THIS EVENT?
Aplastic Anemia (AA) is a very rare and deadly bone marrow failure disease and receives almost no funding for research. The treatment has not changed since 1986; this is unacceptable.
Children 15 years old and younger account for 95% of all diagnosis of AA.
"This disease can take my bride Kelly at any time; I can't sit by and do nothing. I need your help to give Kelly and others with AA a fighting chance." event cofounder Robert Wilhite
Experience the rolling/flat terrain of Jackson County and the endless scenic views throughout the ride.
All net proceeds donated to THE KELLY WILHITE APLASTIC ANEMIA RESEARCH FUND at Emory University. Every penny that goes to this Fund will go DIRECTLY to clinical research.

Subject: Join Us for the Annual Abraham Balawi Memorial 5K - Honoring a Legacy
We are excited to invite you to participate in the Annual Abraham Balawi Memorial 5K on June 28th, an event that holds
special significance for our community. This race, started in 2018, was created to support the Abraham Balawi Memorial Scholarship Fund. The annual scholarships are awarded to at least two deserving Pickens County seniors, chosen by the Awards Committee, to continue Abe’s legacy of excellence, dedication, and perseverance.
About the Event: This 5K race is not just about running—it's about honoring the memory of an extraordinary individual. Abraham “Abe” Balawi, a gifted athlete and student, was tragically taken from us on August 6, 2017, in a car accident. A 2015 graduate of Liberty High School, Abe won the AA State 1600m race in 2014 and went on to run at Mercer University. He was recently awarded a posthumous degree for his achievements. This race helps us keep Abe’s spirit alive through the scholarship fund and annually during the Pickens County Cross Country and Track & Field Meets. The Pickens County Track & Field Meet also hosts the Abraham Balawi Mile Run, which was renamed in his honor.
Why You Should Participate:
Support Local Students: The funds raised from the 5K go directly to the Abraham Balawi Memorial Scholarship, which has allowed us to award local student scholarships since 2017.
Honoring Abe’s Memory: This race is a tribute to Abe’s incredible impact on our community and to remember his legacy as a dedicated runner and student-athlete.
Community Impact: The event also helps fund awards, medals, and t-shirts for local runners. It also supports the Pickens County Cross Country and Track & Field Meet, supporting local XC, track and field athletes.
Past Scholarship Recipients Include:
Keyshawn King (Stanford)
Adam Balawi (Citadel)
Cal Finley (Clemson)
Ally Wilson (USC)
Eric Baldwin (Clemson)
Will Herden (USC)
Hannah Brown (Duke)
Issac Esuary (Clemson)
Ella Harned (Southern Wesleyan)
Noah King (Clemson)
Ashby Williams (Appalachian State)
Event Details:
Date: June 28th
Time: 8:00 am
Location: Liberty High School (Hosted by Liberty High School)
This is a walk/run 5K event that’s open to the public, and we encourage runners of all levels to join us. Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or simply want to show your support for a great cause, we welcome you to participate.
How to Register: To sign up, please visit the link on this website.
Your participation helps ensure we continue to provide scholarships and honor Abe’s legacy. Together, we can make this year’s race a meaningful celebration of his life and contributions.
If you have any questions or need more information, don’t hesitate to reach out. We hope to see you there, running or walking in Abe’s honor.
Best regards,
Shannon Balawi
