General Description Join us for our 14th Anniversary Run in 2027!!!! The Angry Tortoise 25k/50k trail run is held in the beautiful flatwoods of Cary State Forest, located on the outskirts of Jacksonville. This race is a great introduction to both ultra and trail running as it offers well-supported aid stations, a flat course on forest roads, and ample time to finish (8 hours!). The race will also have cool race shirt and finisher awards. Awards will be given to first, second and third overall male and female, first male and female master’s (between 40-49 yrs of age), and first male and female Grandmaster’s (50-69) and Senior Grand Master's (70 & Over) in both the 25k and 50k races. We also like to feed our runners lunch after the race! Cut-off times: There is a generous eight-hour cut-off for both the 25k and 50k, which means you can really spend time in the great outdoors and enjoy the scenery if you choose to do so. Cary State Forest also has a free hot shower in the male and female
restroom that's located near the start/finish area so you can shower after your race! Proceeds from the race support the Florida Striders Kids' Running Programs! Those who register after 12:00pm on 01 February 2026 won't be guaranteed their size for the race shirt. With that being said, we do order extra shirts and will try to accommodate you! Mother's's 50k & Trail Marathon The 6th annual ( This ain't your ) Mother's 50k & Trail Marathon has only 1 rule: Rule 62 = Don't take yourself so damn seriously!! Seriously though we at Sombrero Running Events like to have fun and enjoy the beautiful scenery of this majestic trail here in NEFL. The Pioneer Trail IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL FLORIDA TRAIL, and the reason for that is each section has its own diverse style of terrain with Section 4 ( 2.7 miles ) having some of the most vertical and technical terrain you can find in Florida. The Pioneer Trail is located in Jennings State Forest in Middleburg, Florida ( Jacksonville area ) and is a hidden gem that was created in 2019 and is well maintain and mostly single track that has a few waterfalls and walkover stream crossings. It is one of the most diverse trail systems you will find in Florida and has several beautiful vistas and traverses along the Black Creek Ravines. The 50k course is an out and back that traverses all of the sections of this
diverse trail and is the same course as the Marathon with added mileage with an out n back of the newly added Section 5 and has over 2k of elevation gain/loss. The Marathon is an out and back course that starts at the Dunns Farm Trailhead and starts out on the newest section the Cross Cut section which is 2.5 miles of flat and scenic single track trail, it then goes into Section 4 which is 2.7 miles and has some beautiful vistas overlooking Black Creek so be sure to take the opportunity to get some scenic pictures on this section. After Section 4 is the "4 way" junction where you join the pink blazes of the trail and it takes you through and over Mt. Reagan ( yes we have mountains in Florida ) and just after this section you will enter the "enchanted forest" section or section 1 which is the southern terminus and is a flat and scenic 2.5 mile portion until you reach Indian Ford at the turnaround the marathon course has just about 2k of elevation gain/loss. There is a 11 hr time limit on the
50k and 10 hr time limit on the marathon. 50K & Full Marathon Map,, There is a hard cut off for the marathon at 4 pm and for the 50k at 4:30pm at the 4 way on the return tripClick here for the .gpx 12k and 7k course The 12k will follow the first 6 miles of the Marathon Course and proceed on the pink Dunns Farm trail back to the 4 way and finish up the last .9 on the flat and beautiful palmetto forest section of the course. The 7k course will be the same start as last year by taking the pink dunns farm trail to the 4 way section at .9 and then following the pink loop to the pioneer trail and following it to the Majestic Many Seeps Bridge and then finishing on the brand new Sawyer trail back to the finish. The 7k is more closer to a 5 miler so just to be transparent :) Race Timing SPONSORS If interested in becoming a sponsor on any level please contact the race director Mike Martinez at [email protected] AWARDS We will have overall top 3 in each race category and Masters Awards ( starting
at age 50 ) We also will have our HIGHLY COVETED Slow A$$ awards for those that finish DFL in each division. We also will be giving out technical race shirts with a shirt cut off date of 1/1/25 to be guaranteed a shirt. Lodging Hampton Inn and Suites, 1735 Jeremiah st, Middleburg, Fla 32068 ( 10 miles to the race start ) Race Start Times 50k 715 am Marathon 7:30am 12k 8:30am 7k 9:00 am Packet pickup will be day of race Aid Stations This will be a cup less race so everyone will need to bring their own hydration vest or handheld bottles for their hydration needs. We will have several aid stations along the course at or about every 2.5 or 3 miles that will have both water and electrolyte nutrition ( tailwind/skratch ) as well as the standard fare for ultra distance races. We will also have at least 1 porta pottie at the turnaround / drop bag site as well as the start / finish line. Aid Station locations are marked on each of the trail maps we have in each of the individual race course
descriptions. Music Beneficiaries / Presenters We give back to local organizations with our primary beneficiaries being the Friends of Florida State Forest so they can continued to maintain this beautiful trail we get the opportunity to play on! We also give back to one of our community partners Foundations of Freedom which is a local 501c3 non profit that provides residential living for men to recover from drug/alcohol addictions. We are a fierce advocate for the recovery community and we believe that if given the opportunity many people can and will recover from drug and alcohol addictions.
