Running Up for Air unites our community over a shared passion for running and a desire to drive real, lasting change in the fight for cleaner air. Through endurance events and strategic partnerships, every mile and vertical foot run and every hour volunteered amplifies support for nonprofits dedicated to air quality solutions, ensuring even small donations have greater impact. We tread lightly on the trails while standing firm in our commitment to a healthier planet and cleaner air for all.

Running Up for Air is a growing collection of endurance events created to amplify informed dialogue and empower individuals and organizations actively working on air quality solutions. Proceeds from Up For Air events are directed at carefully selected and vetted non-profit groups who demonstrate high value influence strategies and efforts in the battle for better air. The race platform is used to expose participants and the general public to science-based material about the importance of healthy air. All events are conducted with a minimal footprint philosophy.

Running Up For Air-Staunton is the Colorado edition of the Running Up for Air Series: a 3, 6, 12, or 24-hour winter endurance challenge that takes place at Staunton State Park in Pine, Colorado. Now in its 8th year, Running Up for Air Staunton was launched in 2017 to raise money in support of the fight for improved air quality for those who live along the front range of Colorado - extending all the way from Ft. Collins to Pueblo where air quality is a real and significant issue. The race concept is pretty simple: participants run a 7.1 mile marked trail loop as many times as possible in the allotted time. Each lap offers just over 1600' of gain, and conditions can be tricky in the winter months - think snow and ice! The time of year - February - is intentional as it coincides with the latter part of the winter inversion "season" here in Colorado. Given the time of year, the route is inevitably almost entirely snow and/or ice covered and can easily involve harsh winter mountain

    conditions.

RUFA-Staunton is scheduled for February 6-7, 2026. Back again this year is the option to do a team for the 24-hour and 12-hour events. In the 24-hour, teams can be 2 or 4 person, and in the 12-hour teams can be 2-person. All runners are expected to become fundraisers to support the good work of our selected nonprofit partner: Conservation Colorado Education Fund, chosen for their hard work improving our air quality and preserving and protecting our natural environment.

Wanna run for free: If you raise 10X your registration fee, you will be refunded what you paid to run the race!

The Silverheels Trail Runs take place at an average elevation of over 10,000’, in one of the most visually stunning areas of Colorado. You'll run through ghost towns, past abandoned mines, awe at the wildflowers in full bloom, and dance under the watchful eye of Silverheels Mountain herself and the ever stunning Milky Way Galaxy. Our 10-Mile and 18-Mile options are run on the gorgeous Gold Dust Trail traveling through massive aspen groves, over many high mountain creeks, through old mining encampments, and along a miners ditch hand dug by those in the late 1800s.

***There will be GF/Vegan alternatives for nearly all non-GF/V standard offerings. These are typically held back to save them for those who need them, so please ASK! Also note that while we will do our best to keep utensils and trays separated for these as well as common allergens, this is the backcountry and cross-contamination can occur.

While we will provide plenty of electrolyte options in drink mix and salty real foods, we deem the risks associated with salt in concentrated pill form to be more than we're comfortable providing. We won't restrict runners from using their own salt caps, but will not have them available at aid stations.

    Course Marking

The course will be well marked with pink flagging and pink pin flags. Important intersections will be supplemented with flour ground markings and directional arrows. On longer stretches of trail without intersections, confidence flagging will be placed approximately every quarter mile. Turns will be marked heavily.

    Toilets

Park restrooms are available at the Ranch Hand Start/Finish, Mason Creek Trailhead, and on the Bugling Elk Loop approaching the Elk Pond Aid Station.

If you do need to relieve yourself outside of these spots, please practice appropriate Leave No Trace principles. Aid stations will have toilet paper available.

    Crew Access

Family and friends can meet their runners at the Ranch Hand Start/Finish and Mason Creek Trailheads. Crew or family vehicles will need to pay the regular $10 park entrance fee. Carpooling is highly recommended to save on park fees and limit traffic and parking congestion at the trailheads. Use the Mountain View Park 'N Ride on Highway 285 just 5 miles east of the park for carpooling.

All trails are open to the public, so family and friends are allowed to run, hike, or bike on the course; however, pacing or crewing outside designated aid stations is not allowed and will result in the disqualification of your runner.

The Human Potential Running Series Presents:

The Sawmill Trail Runs @ Staunton State Park

The Sawmill Trail Runs; first started as a “Fat Ass” event at White Ranch Open Space in Golden, CO in December 2013. We incorporated it into an official trail race starting in December 2017. In 2021, this event was moved to its new home at Staunton State Park in Pine, CO featuring 50k, 16-Mile, and 8-Mile distance options.

Staunton State Park is a gem within Colorado’s State Park system. From high grassy meadows at 8,100 feet to soaring granite cliffs over 10,000 feet, Staunton State Park’s varied geology, soils, water features, and climate support rare and unexpected plant communities and a rich diversity of wildlife and provide a myriad of outdoor recreation opportunities. The park is located approximately 40 miles southwest of downtown Denver, north of US Highway 285 and about six miles west of Conifer in Pine, CO.

Special Event Notes: Traction devices such as micro-spikes are welcome should conditions permit. Snowshoes will also be permitted in the event of snow depths exceeding 6″. No other flotation devices will be approved. In the event of deep snow and treacherous conditions on the 50k’s first loop, the loop will be closed and we’ll ask 50k runners to endure the 16-Mile course, twice consecutively.
