Course Stairs, hills, and more hills. About 9,000 feet of vertical packed into 28 miles. It begins at 7:30AM at Old Mill Park (Throckmorton Avenue, Cascade Way, & Old Mill Street intersection), in Mill Valley, California. Within a few hundred yards the course heads up three flights of stairs as tall as a fifty-story building, and up some more through an old horse ranch to Windy Gap. Then it plunges down into Muir Woods, across Redwood Creek, and begins a tough grind up through both trees and grasslands over trail sections named "Dynamite", "The Hogsback", "The Rainforest", and "Cardiac." At the top of Cardiac, the course levels out with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean before it plunges down over the rocks, roots, and stairs of "Steep Ravine" and the discouragingly steep but short climb up "Insult Hill." Finally, as the course follows the relatively gentle slope of The Moors toward the ocean, Stinson Beach is in sight a mile ahead. Once to Stinson, you turn around an head back to Old
Mill Park following the same course. And then do it all over again for the QUAD!!Note: unlike the Dipsea and Double Dipsea, the Quad Dipsea does not allow shortcuts. Race Information Once a thriving Chinese settlement subsisting off of shrimp fishing, China Camp is now a popular state park for boaters, runners/hikers, and mountain bikers. An extensive trail network will greet you with views of Mt. Tam, San Pablo Bay, and San Francisco Bay as you traverse twisting single-track trails, climbing up and over the peak. The courses wind along thick forests and descend out into open trails on the San Pablo Bay side of the park. Each race is relatively fast, with a nice punch of a climb beginning 1.5 miles into the course, leaving plenty of room to push it or just hike and enjoy the wild turkeys and sounds of the woods around you. The three cross-country races will be held in China Camp State Park in San Rafael, CA, as in the past several years. These races are run as a memorial to John Lawson, a Tamalpa Runner who died suddenly in 2000.
Note that start times are changed this year. All women regardless of age age start first at 9:00, masters men start at 10:00, and open men start at 11:00.
The course is the same as it was in 2025 at roughly 4.20 miles, which is mostly rolling single track trail and approximately 1/4 mile on asphalt. Start is near Miwok Mdws gate. Finish line and registration is in Miwok Mdws picnic area.
Warm-up and warm-down. In order to prevent a reoccurrence of a collision between a returning racer and a runner warming down on the course, we ask that you do your warmup and warmdown runs off of the course once racing has started. Suggestions include going south on Shoreline Trail from the Miwok gate starting area, along the stretch of road from the start on up to the finish area, and running carefully on the paved road.
State Park rules limit the number of people in Miwok Mdws at any one time to 200, so please help us out by limiting your stay in the picnic area after your race. The race filled up in 2023 and 2024.
We prefer not to deal with race-day entries, but can accommodate a few last-minute substitutions, mostly for runners who registered early but did not claim their bibs. Email the RD if you need help with submitting your entry on October 11th.
Parking is limited. Please carpool to the greatest extent possible. Park along San Pedro Road, which is close to the start at the Miwok Mdws gate, but about 300 yards from registration in Miwok Mdws picnic area.
For more race details visit the John Lawson Tamalpa Challenge Website or email the RD at [email protected]

Why a 5k?
The 5K for Brandon Lee & Land Defenders started in 2024. This August 2026 marks the 7th year since Brandon was shot by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in an assassination attempt. He was targeted by the Philippine state for organizing in solidarity with indigenous communities in the Cordillera for nearly a decade.
As Brandon continues to require funding for his long-term care, this 5K fundraiser aims to garner awareness of his story, support his needs, and extend solidarity to land defenders in the Philippines. Read this article to learn more about Brandon Lee and the repression of land defenders in the Philippines and worldwide.
This year, on April 19, 2026, Brandon's long time friend and fellow ICHRP-US organizer, Lyle Prijoles, was killed in a massacre of 19 people by the AFP in Toboso, Negros Occidental. Lyle was in the Philippines to learn about the conditions of sugarcane and farmworkers on Negros Island. The region has historically been known as the sugarbowl of the Philippines, but is now known as the "massacre capital" of the country due to the notorious state violence against farmworkers asserting their rights against ruthless landowners and plantation owners.
Brandon and Lyle dedicated their lives to fighting for justice for the Filipino people and their fight for land, life, and livelihood. We dedicate this year's run to Lyle Prijoles, Kai Sorem, RJ Ledesma, Maureen Santuyo, Alyssa Alano, and to all of the victims of the Toboso massacre. Justice for the Negros 19! Stop the Killings in the Philippines!
Same day registration possible.
