Overview
Email the RD at [email protected] to get on the waiting list, everybody who has ever been on the waiting list has gotten in25 and 50 mile fatass style run along the wild and Scenic North Fork of the American River. Expect roughly 10,000' of climbing for the 25 mile and 20,000' for the 50, with a good amount of bushwhacking and route finding thrown in for good measure. Free to enter, but the rule is that you have to wait at the finish for at least one runner to come in.The forest service has confirmed that we don't need a permit as long as we keep it small, so registration for both distances combined will be limited to 50 people. Since portions are off trail, I'm not going to post the map until the week before the event, but it will start and finish at the Shirttail Creek Campground near Foresthill, CA and go up and down out of the canyon using Euchre Bar, Pioneer Mine, Ebeneezer's highway, Green Valley, Mumford Bar, and Italian Bar. There will be one location for drop bags and crew to meet you that you will pass through twice.Don't kid yourself, this is a hard, hard run. Last year's finishers took 14 hours for the 25, and 25 hours for the 50. Distances are approximate, and may refer to nautical miles.Ultrasignup is gracious enough to host fatass events for no cost, but unfortunately the waitlist does not set up for free events. If the event is full, email the RD to get on the waitlist. Everybody who has ever been on the waitlist has gotten in. We have a group campsite for Friday and Saturday night.

Inaugural Year — Where History & Grit Collide April 30 – May 2, 2027 | Georgetown, CaliforniaWelcome to the inaugural Harvest & Howitzer Backyard Ultra — a last-runner-standing race on a private 100-acre Christmas tree and apple farm in the Sierra foothills. The premise is simple: one 4.167-mile loop, every hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains.Built by a team rooted in ultrarunning, Western States, Tevis, trail work, volunteering, and community, this race was created to feel like the sport we fell in love with: hard, honest, personal, and full of people who show up for each other. No traditional finish line. No quick medal-and-go experience. Just grit, hospitality, history, and the question every runner faces each hour:Do you have one more loop in you? This is the backyard ultra you came for. This is a gathering of the tribe. The Heartbeat: Community, Crew & Campfire This is a weekend campout, not a quick race. A private farm. Campfires, crews, families, and the space between
loops—where the race really happens.Come prepared to stay. Bring your people. No corporate noise. No overproduction. Just land, loop, and community.Includes a kids' race. Proceeds support local nonprofits. The Howitzer: Know When to Lay It Down In 1843, Frémont hauled a 1,200-pound cannon across the West—through brutal terrain, rarely used, never abandoned.Until survival forced it.He left it in the mountains.Hauling the CannonEvery runner carries their own howitzer—power, pride, stubborn will. You push for hours, sometimes days. But this race is strategy, not force. The best know the edge. And when it's over, respect goes to the runner who pushed to the limit—and knew when to lay the howitzer down. Location: Regional Park, 3770 Richardson Dr, Auburn, CA 95602
Race Options: Choose your challenge from 8 timed events, ranging from a beginner-friendly 6-hour run to the epic 72-hour ultra. With exceptionally long cutoffs and no strict time pressures, whether you're walking, running, or crawling, there's space for everyone to shine and even earn one of the coveted Mile Madness Buckles.
Course Highlights: A compact 0.85 mile loop means continuous laps with easy access to aid stations, festive decorations, and upbeat music to keep your spirits high. Aim for that first ultra milestone or chase elite goals—many of our runners discover untapped potential here. The course will be professionally measured prior to the race.
Why Mile Madness?
Inclusivity for All: We had runners from ages 10 to 82, with a balanced mix of 52.8% male and 47.2% female participants. In 2024, we welcomed 115 runners with a remarkable 72% buckle completion rate (applies to 48- and 72-hour runners); 2025 was 140 strong, and we're projecting 200-250 for 2026. Beginners who've never run an ultramarathon often surprise themselves with distances they never imagined.
Top-Notch Support: Fully stocked aid station featuring a rotating menu of hearty meals, electrolytes, all the typical aid station food, and endless encouragement from what might be the best volunteers in trail running. Other amenities include on-site massage therapists, family cheer zones, glow run, food trucks, and more...
Bling & Bragging Rights: Earn the coveted Silver 100-Mile Buckle (35 awarded in 2024, many to first timers!) or challenge yourself for the stunning Gold 150-Mile Buckle or the brand new 200-Mile buckle. Plus, a 100% rollover policy up to 24 hours before race start means zero risk if life throws a curveball.
SWAG: Every registered runner will get a race shirt or jacket. Our current plan is to provide gender-specific, packable, puffy jackets. We cannot guarantee sizes for registrations after 9/1/26, but we will do our best to accommodate requests. All runners will also get additional SWAG that will be announced closer to race weekend.
Bib Raffle: We will hold a bib raffle at regular intervals during the race. Registered runners will be entered into the raffle. It's a bonus: you might walk away with fantastic prizes, including shoes, handheld bottles, an antichafe stick, and more. Why should podium winners get all the bling?
Family & Community Focus: Bring your crew! Our expansive 20x30 Cheer Zone offers shaded comfort, music, free snacks and water, games, festive decorations, S’mores, and a DIY sign-making station to fuel the fun. Come solo or with friends—you'll leave with new bonds, shared stories, and memories that last a lifetime. Runners rave: "The highlight of my year!" (Summer W.) and "My favorite race ever!" (Shawnee).
Worry-Free Guarantee: We will roll over your race entry to the next year if you can't run due to injury or training challenges. We want you to enjoy the race you pay for, and we understand that life happens.
Extra Perks: Plenty of clean restrooms, and a commitment to giving back through the Run Free Foundation, whose mission is to empower at-risk youth and runners facing financial barriers by providing access to quality running gear and race registration scholarships, enabling them to pursue their athletic dreams and enhance their well-being.
Mile Madness isn't just about the miles—it's about the madness of joy, grit, and connection that turns strangers into trail family. Whether you're chasing a PR, your first buckle, or just the thrill of the loop, we're here to support you through every step. We may have the best volunteers in the business.
Relay Option: We have a 72-Hour Relay and 48-Hour Relay
Each relay team can have 4-10 runners. Each runner will register and pay a separate registration fee (which covers food, SWAG, and more) and select their relay team. Each team will share a single team bib with one runner at a time on the course. Other team members can use a Pacer bib to support their team member running with the team bib.
Podium awards will go to the top three teams.
Relay runners are not eligible to earn a 100-mile buckle (relay laps should be shared somewhat evenly between team members, so achieving 100 miles per runner is unlikely).
Ultra Lounge: The family cheer zone is getting a more fitting name. We are borrowing the Ultra Lounge name and will have our 13x26 wedding tent with fun activities that will keep your crew going so they can keep cheering you on. We will have food and water, a poster-making station, a glow party, cornhole, and more...
Referral Rewards: We want to reward you for referring other runners to Mile Madness. When you register, you will get a referral code to share. Have your family, friends, or social circle use that code, and you will receive a refund for every referral.
Earn $10 for any 6-Hour or 12-Hour referral. Earn $20 for each referral to the 24-Hour or longer races. The refund will happen automatically, and the referral code must be used by the person registering.
Questions? Email Race Director Brian Goldman at [email protected]. Let's make 2026 your most memorable madness yet!

Iron X: An Extreme Ironing Race Iron X is an extreme ironing race. Ironists (participants) will run a portion of the historic Western States Trail and iron in some of the most iconic Auburn, CA locations while running a half-marathon.What is extreme ironing? If you're not familiar with the sport, please read this first.Disclaimer: This is a fatass - a glorified group run. There will be no course markings, no medical, no medals, no trekking poles, and no pacers allowed.Links: Iron X LinkTree Iron Locations 1. The Foundation Iron (middle of the old foundation at Robie Point - this is the main structure's foundation, just past the 3-sided "garage foundation.")2. The River Iron (at least knee deep in the river, just S of No Hands Bridge)3. The Foresthill Bridge Iron (top of Kickass, E side of bridge, S side of Foresthill Rd)4. The Dead Car Iron (on top of vehicle remains)5. The Statue & Train Car Iron (next ot the statue's foundation block, E side of Lincoln Ave between Elm & Harrison, downtown
Auburn)6. The Clock Tower Iron (in front of/next to it, Lincoln Way at High St, downtown Auburn)7. The Courthouse Iron (in the parking lot in front of the historic courthouse building)8. The Claude Chana Statue Iron (at the corner of Park St & Washington St, Old Town Auburn) Rules Ironists must wear a button-up (or snap-up) shirt throughout the race, removing it, ironing it, and then putting it back on at each of the above locations (you may wear another shirt underneath).Spectators are allowed at all ironing locations except for The Dead Car Iron.Proof of completion: Post-event, ironists must submit their activity link for verification. (Make sure your activity's privacy is set to public.)Ironists must also take a photo or video of themselves ironing their shirt at each location and submit these, post-event. (We suggest uploading them to your Strava activity. If you're not on Strava, you can submit via email - details on this process will be emailed, post-event.) Each photo or video must
be geo-tagged, so make sure location tagging is enabled in your camera settings. (This enables their visibility on Strava activity maps.) The location, ironist, iron, and board must all be clearly visible and apparent in each video/photo. Having another ironist or spectator take said photo/video is also acceptable, provided they are on location at the same time. "Spectator crew" are allowed for this purpose, but this is all they're allowed to do. Providing aid or assisting in any other way is not allowed, with the following exceptions...New in 2027: We will allow aid at the Foresthill Bridge Iron and the Statue & Train Car Iron. You may bring a drop bag to the Start for this purpose. (This is a moving drop bag; it will go to both locations.) You may also have crew at either or both of these two locations.Penalty: Failure to complete an iron in the location specified and provide the required video or photo evidence will result in a penalty of 10 minutes (added to your finish time) per
location.Gear & Supplies: Each ironist must provide their own ironing board, iron, fuel, and water, and carry them with them throughout the event. No muling allowed.Preparation: There are a few different methods of carrying your ironing board to consider.1. Strap your board directly to your pack. Finding the right pack for this purpose is tricky. Snowboard-mountaineering packs may work, but snowboards are generally a bit narrower than ironing boards. Separate straps could be used to secure the board.2. Add 2 shoulder straps to your board and wear it on your back.3. Add a single shoulder strap to your board and carry it under one arm, with the strap over your shoulder.Feel free to discuss in the Facebook group.Regulations:1. Ironing boards must be at least 3' 3" long and 11" wide. Boards must have full-length legs (no tabletop boards).2. Battery-powered irons are required for this, for obvious reasons. Plastic irons are acceptable. The ironing face of your iron should measure 4 1/2" by 9" or
greater. Course Map Download GPX file. Event's current local time: 2:35 AM PT
Race Information The No Hands Heavy Half became an instant classic in 2021. We upped the ante and added a 35K and 50K to the mix.Participants of this race will run along the historic Western States trail, out to “No Hands Bridge”, then tackle one of the toughest climbs in the area: the dreaded K2 training hill. Both the 8k and Heavy Half courses include killer single-track trails along the banks and canyons of the American River; the Half Marathon will cross “No Hands Bridge”, up K2 then towards Cool, CA. Not to be outdone by Training Hill, everyone will climb the punishing Overlook Hill to the finish line, where you’ll revel in the 50 meters of perfectly flat path. 50K runners extend the adventure by crossing over highway 49 to traverse the Wendell T. Robie trail and continuing to explore the Auburn State Recreation Area. The Half may be heavy, but the 50K is down right Furious. The course is varied and far from monotonous, allowing runners to push past discomfort and focus on what’s

Going cupless will keep hundreds, or thousands, of paper cups from being thrown away or left littering the trails. Read more about our cupless events here. Reusable cups by HydraPak will be available for purchase at each event for $5. Volunteer Without the support of enthusiastic and caring volunteers producing our races would not be possible. Only registered runners can participate, and you cannot exchange your entry with another runner.Hosting a trail running event is an expensive and risky endeavor. All race costs are paid for well in advance of race day, so there is no financial gain to be made if a person does not show up on race day. We want all of our registered runners to show up, run, and have fun. While we understand that injuries, conflicts, emergencies, deaths, and other unfortunate events happen and may impact your plans for participation, we must adhere to our cancellation policies. We do not cancel races due to rain or heat. Due to trail work, closures, or for myriad other reasons, permitting agencies may
require changes to the publicized courses at any time prior to an event. This is out of our control, and we therefore will not offer refunds or credits in such a situation. If a race location is changed, but still hosted on the same day, we will automatically transfer the registration over to the new venue, or entrants may choose to run the race remotely and we will mail awards. If a race is postponed all entrants will be transferred to the new date.If the situation does arise where ITR must outright cancel an event, for any reason, there will be no refunds. This could include earthquakes, floods, extreme weather, unsafe air quality, pandemics, or any other "Act of God". There will be no refunds, but future race credit or deferrals may be available, dependent on the circumstances and how close to the race date the event was cancelled. We will communicate with all registered runners as soon as possible regarding the cancellation and any pertinent information. Event's current local time: 1:59
