This event is being held in loving memory of Dr. Paul Wawryko, who passed away in December of 2023. Paul was a beloved friend, coworker, and family member to countless people and we plan to honour his memory with an annual 5K event. He was an avid runner, completing the Chicago Marathon 3 times, the Boston Marathon twice, and a half Ironman in Chattanooga. Paul was an incredibly talented and hard working runner, accomplishing the incredible feat of a sub-3 hour marathon on his first attempt, and completed all 5 of his marathons with sub-3 hour finish times. He aspired to complete the 6 global major marathons and intended to compete in the Boston Marathon annually. Seeing his loved ones commemorate him in this way would mean a lot to him.
The proceeds from the event will be used to fund an annual scholarship for the department of Pathology, where Paul worked and won a prestigious teaching award as the educator of the year. The remaining funds will be donated to various causes which were near and dear to Paul’s heart. A post-race event will be held featuring a beer created specifically for this event. We believe that an event combining fitness, camaraderie, and the outdoors is a perfect way to remember Paul, and we hope to see you all there.
Joy in Action
Virtual Run/Walk/Cycle Fundraising Challenge
Joy in Action Virtual is a nationwide fundraising challenge in support of The Joy Smith Foundation’s fight against human trafficking. Participants across Canada commit to raising funds in their communities while completing a chosen distance. Every dollar raised supports prevention, education, and survivor initiatives, and every kilometre reflects that commitment.
Through September 30, 2026, participants focus on building momentum, engaging donors, and driving impact. Fundraising remains at the heart of the challenge, with participants competing on a dedicated virtual leaderboard, earning incentives, and working toward prizes.
Fundraising winners will be announced on October 1 2026 once the campaign closes.
Complete your chosen distance by September 30th
The Sprinter (5 km walk/run or 25 km cycle),
The Trekker (25 km walk/run or 100 km cycle),
The Endurer (100 km walk/run or 500 km cycle), or
