Serena Strong Race – Supporting Serena Bassett

Join us for the Serena Strong 5k as we come together to lift up our dear friend Serena Bassett in her courageous fight against metastatic breast cancer. Serena has always shown strength, grace, and resilience—now it’s our turn to rally behind her.

To keep this event close to Serena’s heart, the race will be held right in her own neighborhood, starting at the Otter River Hotel (“The Onion”). We’re honored to bring the community together in a place that means so much to her.

Every dollar raised, including all donations, will go directly to Serena to help cover medical expenses, treatment costs, and the many financial burdens that come with this battle. To maximize the impact, we kindly ask all participants to please consider paying the full registration fee including processing fee, ensuring that 100% of the funds can go straight to supporting Serena’s needs.

In addition to the race, there will be a 50/50 raffle and raffle baskets, with all proceeds going directly to Serena. These extra opportunities to give make an even bigger impact on easing her financial burdens.

Serena’s fight is our fight. By showing up—whether you run, walk, cheer, or donate—you’re helping ensure she has one less thing to worry about during this challenging time.

    Whether you’ve been with us from our humble beginnings in 2010 or are new to this “Cheesy Experience,” we are so glad to have you as a part of the race.

    The Big Cheese 5K is a blast! You’ll feel accomplished. And most importantly, you’ll know that you’ve done your part to help build programs for others in need.

    This year, we are raising funds to make exciting, much-needed improvements to our facilities, including a gym floor in our Main Street Gym, upgrading and expanding our Orange location, and adding new equipment and Healthy Living programs at both locations. The YMCA is a non-profit organization that partly relies on the community for continued support, which, in turn, can give back to the community by offering supportive, fun, and exciting healthy living activities such as the LiveStrong program (a supportive program to build back strength and spirit for cancer survivors), yoga, childcare, senior citizen exercise programs, swimming lessons, sports, weightlifting and so much more!

    As we gear up for the 2026 race, we are seeking your support. Donations will help offset the event's costs, including SecondWind Timing for a competitive or non-competitive race experience. Not only does this strengthen our event and community, but it also allows all of our race registrations to go directly to the important facility updates and community-strengthening causes we support.     Members of the Central Mass Striders in good standing that are 70 years of age or older on race day are FREE. Please select the correct option when registering.     If there is a natural disaster or other type of similar emergency that causes a cancellation, every effort will be made to schedule a postponed race later in the year. However, refunds will not be available. If you need to defer due to medical issue or pregnancy, please contact the Race Director.

    3 Mile and 10K Race Information

    The Wachusett Mountain Race is a proud part of the USATF-NE Mountain Circuit 2026.

    For circuit scoring, you will run the 3 mile course uphill to the top of Mount Wachusett.

    Optionally, you can continue on with us to the Finish Line located at the bottom of the mountain to complete a full 10K. All 10K runners will receive their race split at the top of the mountain (which is the number used for mountain circuit scoring) as well as their 10K time. Either option is the same price.

    Cash prizes for the male, female, and non-binary winners of the 3 Mile Race and the 10K Race.

    Merchandise prizes for the age group winners (0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+) of the 10K race. There are no age group prizes for the 3 Mile Race.

    Mugs for the first 400 runners!

    Packet Pick-Up

    Bib and mug pick-up will be on race day beginning at 8:00 am in the parking lot for the Ski Lodge.
