Nestled in the Shawnee National Forest, Giant City State Park is a premier destination for hiking, lodging, and camping in southern Illinois. We are now proud to offer a premier trail (heavy) ½ marathon and 40k primarily utilizing the Red Cedar Trail. The course will consist mostly of single track, but will have some gravel road connectors, horse trails, fields, and less than a mile of paved road connectors. The trail varies from very technical to runnable in sections, boasting over 1800 feet of elevation gain (one half-marathon loop). Also, expect the possibility of getting your feet wet in several creek crossings, rain dependent! As an incentive to our teen and cross country runners, they will be capped at a $40 entry to the half-marathon. We want to encourage our youth to run the trails in southern Illinois. Also, the t-shirt is now an add-on instead of an automatic upcharge for those who wish to forgo a race shirt. (If you change your mind, there should be some extra at packet

    pick-up. First come, first served.)

NEW FOR 2026! For anyone not yet ready for the half-marathon, you can get a taste of the Red Cedar Trail with a new 5k option! We will utilize a service road for approximately 3/4 of a mile before connecting to the Red Cedar Trail. The rest of the 5k course will finish the same as the half-marathon course. There will be one hydration station at the return to the start/finish at approximately the 2-mile mark. Also as an incentive to our teen and cross country runners, they will be capped at a $15 entry to the 5k! (T-shirt is still an additional $12.)

The course starts at Pavilion 5 for all events. Start/Finish GPS Packet pickup will be at 6-7:45 am the day of the event. Early packet pickup will be Friday at 5-6 pm at Pavilion 5 (also the start/finish). The course mostly utilizes the Red Cedar Trail, sometimes intersecting with the River to River Trail, and some surrounding horse trails. The course will be well-marked with ribbons and arrows. All intersections will have directional signs and confidence markers. Be aware that this is also an open course. You may encounter casual hikers and/or horseback riders. Be courteous, slow down, and announce your presence as you approach for everyone's safety.

There will be 2 well-stocked aid stations and 2 hydration stations per loop. One loop for the half-marathon and two loops for the 40k. The 5k will have a hydration station at approximately mile 2 at the return to the finish. Be prepared to be self-sufficient between aid stations, and be aware that it may take an hour or more depending on your physical condition. This is a cupless race. There will be no cups on the race course. Prepare accordingly.

SWAG: Each participant will receive a swag bag full of goodies, with the option to receive a t-shirt for a $12 add-on. Each finisher will receive post-race refreshments, a cooling towel, and a beer from the air-conditioned lodge! (Must be 21 years-of-age or older) You may also select a non-alcoholic beverage. Half-marathon and 40k finishers will receive a finisher's medal as well. LAST DAY FOR GUARANTEED SHIRT IS May 15th.

The Giant City Lodge also offers dining options for participants, family, and friends for a post-race meal. Be sure to check out their famous fried chicken!

If you would like sleeping accommodations, the Giant City Lodge has cabins to rent, and only a quarter mile away from the start/finish. May is a busy month, so call and book early! (618) 457-4921 Located just two miles from the start/finish, Giant City State Park also has electric and primitive camping options. If a hotel is more your style, Carbondale is only 20 minutes away. Also located nearby are many BNB options.

This is a night time run. Run, jog, walk, rest, stop and start as much as you'd like.

The objective is to see how far you can go; however, you can stop at any time if you've reached your goal or if you've had enough.

REGISTER BY MAY 19th TO BE GUARANTEED A T-SHIRT

    HIGHLIGHTS:

CHIP TIMING SYSTEM will keep your distance recorded. We will display your distance continually at the timing tent. Check the monitor as you run by.

No traffic, no hills, no roots, no hard running surface.

NO HOT SUN BEATING DOWN ON YOU.

LARGE AID STATION on the track. We have a fully stocked station, containing the normal snacks and fruit plus salty items such as pretzels and chips, soda & PB&J sandwiches are a staple. Grilled cheese sandwiches, bacon, and so much other good food to keep you going.

Bring your own fluids containers. We try hard to not use any cups. You can leave your container at your course-side table, or if you don't have a table, at the table by the aid station (be sure to put your name on it).

AMENITIES and AWARDS: Each runner will receive a shirt (if registered by May 19) and a custom medal. The top finishers will also receive a custom award!

REASONS FOR RUNNING RUTS: Great training venue for practice at running at night... calibrate your nighttime nutrition needs, get used to being up all night for that upcoming 100 miler (Tunnel Hill) or 24 hour race. Perfect social running event with serious results. You can feel safe due to all the runners around you. Unlike marathons, and non-loop events, you see your friends the entire time, giving you opportunities to run or walk with some runners you'd never get to run with.

This could possibly be the course you'll set a personal best for whatever distance you run. Knowing that your vehicle is close by, you have the confidence to keep going.

On Site Parking, either in the huge parking lot, or right on the grass infield. No hotel needed.

SET UP: Beginning any time after 2pm on Saturday June 6, you can set up a tent under the large shade trees in the grass infield, or alongside the course. There is plenty of room. This is a good one to bring the family to. You can stop and see them as much as you like. Encourage them to run or walk a few laps with you. They love it, and so do we. We only ask that you carry your trash out with you if at all possible.

PACKET PICK UP: Begins at 5 pm at the race site in the white building near the grandstands. You will receive a shirt, your race bib with timing chip.

DOGS: We love dogs, however they are NOT allowed on the course as part of the race. IF you bring your dog, you will need to keep them on a leash, and out of the way of other runners, or guests.

We're so excited to spend the evening under the stars with you all!

Please reach out with any questions to Micki at [email protected]

P.S. - You can also register day of race at packet pick up but we cannot guarantee shirt availability.

Race start and finish behind the Carterville Community Center

Join us for the first Sundown Showdown. Race start and finish behind the Carterville Community Center. This event resembles a high school-style cross country meet, using standard scoring and a 5K course. This is a team event, with 3-5 runners per team. (3 scoring runners per team) If you don't have a team or enough people to make an entire team, we will help you on race day to put a team together. You can run the race solo, if you prefer. You can expect mostly grass with a little gravel and paved path in the mix.

Awards for the top 20 female and male runners as well as top team in each division (Male, Female, and Mixed).

Team scores are calculated by adding up the finishing positions of the top five runners on each team. Each runner earns points based on their finishing place (1 point for 1st, 2 points for 2nd, and so on). The total points for the team's top three runners are summed, and the team with the lowest total score wins.

    Race Markings

Race will be marked with the following paint

    Mile 1 - Red

    Mile 2 - White

    Mile 3 - Blue

There will be a lead vehicle to guide the runners through the course.

The Last Boyscout is a Last Man Standing Race that utilizes the Boyscout Trail at Ferne Clyffe State Park. The format of this type of race is simple and designed to reward the tough, not necessarily the fast. All participants will receive a shirt and memorabilia to remember their efforts! Registration is capped at 75 runners. Leaving us some room to add runners later who are truly going for the win!!!

In the 7 years we have had the event, we have reached 100 miles just one time. The course is tough. All you have to do is keep going. Just as return runners dig deep to best last years number, new runners set out to test their toughness. Each year is about resilience and continuing to push against a course that doesn't want you to succeed. While most runners meet or surpassed their goals, a few runners are not ready for the hills on the course. The 600 feet of climbing per loop will creep up on you.

Inspired by the original last person standing race, Big Backyard Ultra, this race follows the same rules. You can find those rules in the rules page.

At 6:40am the race will start. Runners will have 1 hour to complete a 4.167 mile loop. At 7:40am, runners must have finished the previous loop and be in the starting corral to start the next loop or they are eliminated. This will continue until only one runner finishes a loop. That person will be, The Last Boyscout.

THE COURSE: Runners will start the race on the Day Loop. This loop will consist of some single track trail, some jeep road trail, and finishes with a little over a mile on the road. The course is 100% runnable, with a few mildly technical spots and two good hills. With the Boyscout Trail being the steepest hill. If you are not accustomed to trails you will consider this trail to be very technical. The Day Loop has around 600 feet of elevation per loop. The Night Loop will start at 6:40pm and is an out and back course with a north turnaround and a south turnaround. Runners will be required to wear a head lamp and reflective vest during the night. The start/finish area is near the middle of this course. Runners will leave the start/finish area and go North up to the top of the Boyscout Trail, turn around and come back down. Run back towards the start area but stay on the road and run to the south turnaround. After the south turnaround runners will head back to the start/finish area. The

night route is 75% paved road. Both courses have the potential for two creek crossing depending on the amount of rainfall. The start/finish area will be the only aid station on the course. It is a covered pavilion right next to the starting corral. The race will provide water, ice, food, and hot food later in the race in this area. Runners should be prepared to be self sufficient and not rely on the aid station. There are pit toilets in the start/finish area and the first 1/4 mile of each loop. Also porta toilets will be available.

THE VENUE: The Last Boyscout is located at the beautiful Ferne Clyffe State Park in the heart of Southern Illinois!! The Start/Finish area is located at the Hillside pavilion. The Park has electric campgrounds as well as primitive campgrounds. The park is located in between Interstate 57 and Interstate 24. Easy to travel to from surrounding states. For more information about the park click this link: Ferne Clyffe State Park. For more information about camping within the park click this link: Camping Info

River to River Runners Club: This race is a River to River Runners Club event. Dedicated to providing quality running events across the Southern Illinois region. Like the River to River Relay, Broken Boulder 10 Mile Trail Race, Fly With The Eagles half marathon, and many other races. For more information about the River to River Runners, click this link: River to River Runners ***Club members will receive $10 off the entry fee!!
