Open Water Run Swim

Dive into the adventure at the

Meridian Swim Ruataniwha.

The ultimate open water swim on the sparkling turquoise waters of Lake Ruataniwha, right in the heart of the stunning Mackenzie Region!

Since making a splash in 2023, this event has already given back over $20,000 to local community groups – supporting everything from water safety programs to water-based activities across Twizel. Groups like Mackenzie Lakes Coast Guard, Twizel and South Island Rowing, St John, Twizel Swim Club, Land SAR, and the Twizel Community Patrol have all benefited – proving that every swimmer, sponsor, and supporter is helping the community thrive both in and out of the water.

Now entering its 4th year in 2026, Meridian Swim Ruataniwha has cemented itself as a must-do event on the southern swim calendar. And thanks to the Southern Swim Series – linking together The Ruby in Wanaka, The Whakatipu Legend in Queenstown, and of course, our very own Meridian Swim Ruataniwha – swimmers can take on all three and be in to win a spectacular spot prize worth at least $750 in 2026!

✨ Save the date: Saturday 14 March 2026 ✨

The first splash hits the water at 9:30am (final start times confirmed closer to the day). With three fun-filled challenges, there’s something for every swimmer:

🏊 The Top Hut Sports Bar & Bistro 500m – the perfect entry-level event for first-timers, social swimmers, or anyone keen to dip their toes into open water.

🏊 The Twizel/Mackenzie Four Squares 1500m – a great middle-distance swim for those who want to test themselves and feel the thrill of a challenge.

🏊 The Mt Cook Alpine Salmon 3800m – our premier endurance event, tailor-made for experienced open water swimmers and triathletes chasing their big goals.

With awesome spot prizes, a buzzing lakeside atmosphere, and the knowledge that your swim is giving back to the Twizel community, Meridian Swim Ruataniwha is more than just a race – it’s a celebration of people, place, and the joy of open water swimming.

🌊 New for 2026 – The Teams Category! 🌊

Swim Ruataniwha just got even more exciting – now you can race not just for yourself, but as part of a Team! When you enter, simply select if you’re swimming solo or lining up with your crew.

🏊 Two team vibes – pick your style:

  • Social Teams – All about fun, friendship, and giving it a go! Gather your workplace buddies, swim club mates, or group of friends and take on any event together.

  • Performance Teams – Serious speed and bragging rights on the line! Perfect for club rivalries or anyone chasing the title of fastest team in the lake.

⚡ How it works:

  • Teams must swim the same distance event (but your workplace or club can have multiple teams across different distances).

  • A team can comprise swimmers across all age groups, but must all swim in the same event.

  • Make sure your team name is identical for all team members entering.

  • A team needs a minimum of 3 swimmers with maximum of 5 swimmers making up a team.

  • The fastest 3 times in your team are averaged to determine your result (Performance Team)

  • ✅ No extra entry fee! Everyone just enters individually, add your team name, and your results automatically count towards your team.

  • All Teams must be complete by event entry close at midnight 11 March 2026. No on the day teams will be accepted.

So, rally your squad, lock in a name, and dive in – because Swim Ruataniwha 2026 isn’t just about individual glory, it’s about team pride too! 💪

    About Hard Labour Weekend

The Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend is a multi-sport event that takes place every October in the stunning high country of the Mackenzie Region.

There are three events over two days – canal kayak (20km), mountain bike (16km or 40km), and off-road run or walk (10km or 21km) – with options for almost everyone, from multi-sport athletes to families. For Youth Hard Labours there is a timed Indoor Row.

Kids can do the Mini Dusky mountain bike (10km) or run/walk the Mini Pyramid (5km).

For 2026 an over age bracket for over 65 across all events has been added, except youth hard labour.

People can enter individual events or, for the really keen, complete all three events and become a “Hard Labourer”!

It all began in 1985 when a half marathon was started as a fundraiser for community groups helping on the day. In the early 2000’s, emphasis shifted towards funding kids sports clubs. Since then, it has evolved into a multi-sport event but still has its focus on fundraising for local youth sports. Twizel is home to a thriving sports scene, from snowboarding to netball to rowing to rugby. Athletes, sports teams, and clubs have travel costs and equipment to cover and Hard Labour Weekend supports these endeavours with some funds from the event distributed back into the sports community. They also support community groups such as Twizel St John, Coastguard Mackenzie Lakes, Twizel Kindergarten, and the Twizel Early Learning Centre who support the events with safety backup and preparing food for competitors.
