Bradley Veerman Charity Fund is hosting the Elwood Community Days 5K Run & Walk. Proceeds from this event will support the Bradley Veerman Charity Fund. The Bradley Veerman Charity Fund is a 501(C) 3, not-for-profit, whose goal is to raise money for EMS scholarships, donate to other not-for-profit organizations dedicated to those in public service, public safety, and first responders in need.

This year’s race is more than just a community tradition; it is a solemn observance. As our nation marks 25 years since the events of September 11, 2001, we gather to honor the "spirit of the first responder" that Bradley embodied every day of his life.

Honoring the Legacy: Brad’s career was rooted in the same selflessness shown by the heroes of 9/11. Whether he was on the front lines as a firefighter/police officer or leading the way at the 911 Communications Center, his goal was always the same: to protect and serve.

In coordination with the 25th-anniversary national "9/11 Day of Service," the Elwood Community Days 5K serves as a local way to turn a day of tragedy into a day of positive action.

Your registration fee directly funds the next generation of responders. By providing EMS scholarships, we ensure that the promise to "Never Forget" is backed by the action of "Always Supporting" those who step up to serve today.

The 25th anniversary reminds us that the need for brave, well-trained first responders never fades. When you run or walk this year, you are not just honoring Bradley; you are honoring every man and woman who has answered the call over the last quarter-century.

"We don't just remember the heroes of the past; we invest in the heroes of the future."

We feel that even though Bradley has completed his task here on earth, his spirit to protect and help others lives on in all of us. Please help keep his spirit of service and giving to other’s alive.

    Event Information

Event Description: You may compete in either a 8-hour or 4-hour race on a 1.65 mile loop course at Limestone Park. The course, mostly crushed limestone and partly asphalt, is about half flat and half hilly with one short-but-steep downhill and one short-but-steep uphill plus a couple of other small hills, with a maximum elevation change of 50 feet. NEW THIS YEAR - During the last half hour, you may switch to a 1/4 mile out and back loop (1/8 mile each way) if you don’t have time to do a full course loop.

How it works: At the end of each loop you will check in with the scorekeeper. Then, take a break between loops or go right back out again; the choice is yours. Do as many loops as you can in the allotted time for your race. The scoring will be based on total loops completed. In the event of ties, the person who finished his or her last loop earliest will be the winner. Partial loops will not count. Use your own judgement about when to start a final loop. NEW THIS YEAR - During the last half hour, you may switch to a 1/4 mile out and back loop (1/8 mile each way) if you don’t have time to do a full course loop.

Aid Station: There will be a well-stocked aid station at the start/finish of the loop, It will be mostly limited to items that are individually wrapped. Restrooms will also be available there. There is an area where runners can set up their own base camps. If you have any special needs/wants for refreshments, you should plan on bringing your own.

Awards: Overall awards and age group awards will be based on participation. Finisher awards to all participants (personalized with your name for pre-registered participants.)

Net proceeds of this event will be donated to: Kankakee Veterans Assistance Commission and Limestone Park.

There will be a Sweeper at the race that will maintain a 20-minute per mile pace. Please stay ahead of the sweeper to be guaranteed an official time at the finish. Course marshals will be on course until the sweeper passes them.

We will hand out overall and age group winner awards in the main festival tent starting at around 12:30 pm until around 3 pm. Any awards not picked up on race day can be picked up at Manhattan Public Library on Monday, March 8, 2027, between 4:30 pm and 6 pm.

Welcome to Irish Fest: In cooperation with the Irish American Society of County Will, the Prairie State Road Runners proudly presents the annual Manhattan Irish Fest Parade 5k. This unique race starts a parade, runs along the parade route, and is included with festival activities. After competing on a fast and flat road race course, runners get admission to the main tent for awards, food and beverages.

Parking: Because of the parade, parking in town is very limited. We strongly advise all race participants to park at the Metra station at 15601 W. Sweedler, and take the buses that will be provided. Bus service at the Metra Station begins at 9:30am. The last bus leaving the Metra Station for the start line is 10:30am. The race begins at the intersection of North and Thelma streets near St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

Race Day Registration and Packet Pickup: The Metra station is also the designated area for race day packet pickup starting at 8:30 am with bus service from there to the starting line. (See below for early packet pickup). ONLINE REGISTRATION CLOSES AT 10:00AM ON RACE DAY OR IF RACE HITS CAPACITY.

Early Packet Pickup: Race packets may be picked up on Friday at Fitness Premier in Manhattan from 1pm until 8 pm. When registering for the race, you will have the option to purchase additional festival buttons at the special pre-sale price of $10 each. Though we strive for accuracy, please make sure you receive the correct amount of festival buttons before leaving the fitness center. The buttons are good for admission to the festival that same evening, so you may want to plan to get your packet early.

Shuttle Service: Shuttle bus service begins at 9:30am. The last bus is scheduled to leave Metra Station at 10:30. If you miss the bus, you will have but a one-mile warm-up run from the lot to the starting line. There will be no gear check, so please leave your extra things in your car. After the race, a bus at Anna McDonald school takes you back to the Metra parking lot. The last bus from the finish area will be leaving for the Metra Station at 12:30pm.

The Race: Start line is at Thelma Ave and North St. The finish line is at Second St and Eastern Ave. There will be timing mats at the start and finish!

Post-race Party: Snacks and water will be available at the finish line, however participants will want to make their way to the main festival tent, where they will find hot sandwiches, beer, and other beverages for purchase. The post-race party and awards will be inside the main tent where there will be live music, Irish dancing, and a bagpipe performance! All race participants will receive a coupon on their race bib to redeem for a free beer or non-alcoholic beverage. Soft drinks will be available at the PSRR booth as non-alcoholic drinks.
