18.6 Miles Run

The Norwegian Ruck March is a military endurance event that involves marching 18.6 miles (30 km) while carrying a rucksack weighing at least 25 pounds, designed to test physical and mental stamina.

History and Purpose

The Norwegian Ruck March originated in 1915 as a test of marching endurance for soldiers in the Norwegian military. Its strategic goal was to enable troops to move large units swiftly over great distances while remaining combat-ready. Today, it aims to stimulate interest in long-distance marching among both military and civilian participants.

Event Standards

Distance: Participants must complete a march of 18.6 miles (30 km).

Weight: A minimum rucksack weight of 25 pounds (11 kg) is required.

Time Limits: Men must complete the march in 4 hours and 30 minutes. Women have a slightly longer time limit of 4 hours and 50 minutes.

Uniform: Military personnel must wear an approved military uniform and military-grade boots. Civilians can wear civilian clothing, but it must weigh at least 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg).

Event BLUF:

  • The ruck consists of a timed 30 km/18.6-mile march (march/run) with rucksack containing 11 kg (24 lbs.)

  • Military Members: Field uniform will be worn with military grade boots

  • Civilians: Civilian clothing is allowed but must include boots, long pants, and be a minimum weight of 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs.).

  • Rucksack with contents must weigh in at minimum 11 kg/24 lbs. at both start and finish line. Rucks/backpacks must be in regulations for military participants, and it is highly recommend to utilize a ruck with frame and waist belt.

The Spring rendition of the Girls on the Run 5k will return to Wright State University. Girls on the Run is an incredible program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run strives for a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

As many of you know, our Girls on the Run participants traditionally run alongside an adult Running Buddy. The job of the Running Buddy is to provide one-on-one support and encouragement to their girl as she takes on a great challenge. YOU can help our girls find their happy pace and share in the magic of helping her cross the finish line. The race day give-away is a Girls On The Run branded reusable bag and is first come first served - so don't wait to sign up!

Back this year, we are continuing a Fun Run. The half-mile fun run will start and finish at the same start finish line as the 5K. It will start at 12:30pm. This race will not be timed, but we will run the clock for participants to see their time. It is open to anyone not quite ready to take on the entire 5K - and a great opportunity for younger siblings and friends!

When: Saturday, April 25, 2026. 5k at 1:00pm. Fun Run at 12:30pm. Doors open for registration and check-in at 11:30am.

Where: Wright State University (park in Lot 17)

Cost: $35 Early Bird (now through April 18th) and $40 after April 18th

Who: EVERYONE is invited to participate!

Thank you for supporting our girls and leading by example in our community
