SQUID PRO QUO is made up of three separate swims aimed to help you get some open water distance under your belt early in the season - you do the distance in return for the fitness - a simple SQUID PRO QUO!:

    • Friday evening – a one mile swim starting and finishing at the Grotto Bay beach

    • Saturday morning – a 5km swim starting and finishing at Shark Hole in Harrington Sound

    • Saturday night – a 1500m night swim starting at Trunk Island in Harrington Sound and finishing at the Aquarium, after which we will have food and drinks in the main hall of the Aquarium

Sign up for 2026 and kick off your open water season!!

    SQUID PRO QUO Details:

Feel free to do one, two or all three of the distances – we are trying to make the focus on getting in some distance, so if you want your time please wear a watch and time yourself! If you want to wear wetsuits, that’s fine, again the focus is on giving you an early season chance to get in the water. The sea surface temperature in late April/early May should be approximately 20˚c / 68˚f, hopefully warm enough for most participants, but also prior to peak boating season.

All participants will receive an event t-shirt, a tow float (optional for the two daytime swims but must be worn for the night swim) and dinner at the Aquarium after the final swim.

Night Swim details: Swimmers will meet at the Aquarium service entrance next to Flatt's Bridge and be transported out to Trunk Island at 8:00pm for the 1500m night swim and will swim back to the Aquarium. Tow floats with lights inside will be provided and it is mandatory that they are worn. Buoys will also be illuminated to light the route back to the Aquarium and there will be kayak support. Bags can be left on the boat and collected at the finish.

    Pre Event Check-in and Briefing

Check-in will open 1 hour prior to the start of each swim and a safety briefing will take place before each start.

    PLACE

Start and Finish of each Yard (Loop) is at Clearwater Beach, Southside, St, David’s showcasing Bermuda’s Backyard.

    EVENT DETAILS

This is an exciting race format and the 4th Backyard run to be held in Bermuda in accordance with the Rules established by the original Big’s Backyard event.

See how many Bermuda Yards you can complete! There is no minimum or maximum, it’s totally up to the individual participant. Run for fun, run for charity, or run to win – all approaches are encouraged. Target a number of Yards to fit your current training schedule. THERE IS ALSO A TEAM EVENT - 4 entrants from the same company, partnership, government department, or other organisation - to register your team email bdabackyardultra@gmail.com for a team entry form. Note that this is not a "relay" but the aggregate number of Yards completed by the team members.

Runners are required to complete a 4.167-mile (6,706-meters) Yard or Loop within an hour, starting on the hour. Any time available between finishing one Yard and starting the next Yard can be used to hydrate, fuel and rest.

Your run continues until you fail to complete a Yard within an hour or you decide to voluntarily withdraw.

The event continues until either (i) just one runner completes a Yard (the last person standing), or (ii) no runner starts the next Yard at the designated time if more than one runner completed the previous Yard. In 2025 we had runners completing anything from 1 Loop to our winner completing 21 Loops! The Bermuda National Record is currently 28 Loops (116.7 miles).

Runners are not permitted to deviate from the course (except to access bathrooms) and cannot accept assistance from non-runners while completing a Loop (other than for emergencies), including accepting food and drink or pacing. Runners are permitted to carry food and drinks while running.

Those runners wishing to “go long” have the option of establishing their own base camp and designating crew to support them in the base camp area only.

If you decide to run Yards after dusk, you will be required to wear a headlamp and a reflective vest.

Runners and Crew will be provided with a detailed Event Guide setting out run protocols and rules. You will also be notified of a Race Briefing prior to the event. Should you need more information now, then please contact us per the information below.

Entry fee is $50 and deadline for entries. Thanks to the support of our race sponsors 100% of your entry fee will be donated 100% to Raleigh Bermuda to support its youth programs. The deadline for entries is midday Wednesday February 18th. Entries may be accepted after this time at the discretion of the Race Organization and subject to the event limit of 150. Refunds are at the discretion of the Race Organization. Race organizers reserve the right to close entries early based on capacity limitations.

There will be prizes for last person standing in each of 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 - 69, 70+ age categories. All 4 members of the winning team will also receive prizes.

Become a member of Bermuda’s Backyard Yards Clubs by surpassing different milestone number of Yards.

Affiliated with Big’s Backyard Ultra with qualifying possibilities for other Backyard Ultra races.

We intend this to be a safe and fun experience for runners of all levels and hope you will challenge yourselves to set a new Backyard personal best and ring the PB bell.

The best 15 Bermuda resident performances during the qualifying period, which ends on 16th August 2026, will qualify for the Bermuda National Team to compete in the Backyard World Satellite Championships in October 2026.

    RACE ROUTE

There will be slightly different day and night Loops.

The Day Loop will leave the Clearwater Beach Base Camp and transition Coopers Island Reserve, running on trail and sand, and then follow the road/footpath to the turnaround at Southside Road/Carter’s Bay Road roundabout returning to Clearwater Beach Base Camp.

For safety reasons the Night Loop will leave the Clearwater Beach Base Camp using only road and footpath heading northeast past the 3 Southside roundabouts and completing a turnaround loop passing the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Center and returning the same way to the Clearwater Beach Base Camp.
