2 Miles 3.1 Miles 6.2 Miles Run Trail Virtual Walk

Join us Saturday, March 7, for the 19th annual Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth!

PLEASE NOTE: THE EVENT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE AT STINSON PARK IN AKSARBEN VILLAGE

What is the Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth?

Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth offers participants the opportunity to register for a timed 5K run, timed 10K run or untimed two-mile walk. We also offer a virtual option if you're unable to join us in person.

Why do we do it?

Since 2007, Metropolitan Utilities District and Omaha Public Power District have teamed up to host this annual event, with proceeds benefiting local utility assistance programs to help friends, family and neighbors in our communities pay their utility bills. The event is hosted in the cold winter months to bring attention to those who struggle to keep the lights on and heat their homes. However, utility assistance is a year-round need.

Funds raised are administered by Dollar Energy Fund, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3), and then split between M.U.D.’s Home Fund and OPPD’s Energy Assistance Program to provide assistance to our customers living in Burt, Cass, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington counties. All money raised is distributed through this local network.

Dollar Energy Fund's mission is to improve the quality of life for households experiencing hardships by providing utility assistance and other services that lead to self-sufficiency.

What are the details?

Participants will gather Saturday, March 7 in Aksarben Village to run, walk and raise awareness for those in need of utility assistance in our community. The timed events (5K and 10K) will begin at 9 a.m. and the untimed 2-mile walk will start at 9:15 a.m. Participants in the 10K and 5K should aim to finish by 10:30 a.m. (this is a 1.5-hour time limit). If you're uncertain whether this is reasonable, please consider dropping down in distance.

Vendors will be set up on-site and everyone is encouraged to visit Inner Rail and Aksarben Village businesses before and after the event.

Awards will be given to the 1st place overall male and female in the 5K and 10K. Age group awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place male and female runners in each of the following divisions for the timed 5K and 10K events: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.

For those signing up for the virtual option, we encourage you to complete your registered distance on March 7 in your neighborhood, on local trails or from your home or gym treadmill! (No swag or awards given to virtual participants.)

Registrations are non-refundable. Strollers are welcome. Pets and service dogs are allowed and owners must adhere to city leash ordinances.

    Background:

From about 1921 to 1925 the city of Omaha wintered alligators in Fire Station No. 6, located at 24th & Cuming street. When the weather turned warm the alligators were transferred to Riverside Park, which today is the location of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. On March 22, 1922 an alligator escaped its basement enclosure, mounted the stairs, and chased Captain Charles R. Fleming, and the other seven firefighters, from the firehouse. It was an event of some notoriety, receiving several columns of ink in Omaha newspapers.

In memory of this strange, historical moment, the Omaha Firefighters Historical Society (OFFHS) returns with Captain Fleming’s 2nd Annual 5K Gator Fun Run. The run will be held inside Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, the original home of the alligators!

    Race Details:

The race is set to begin at 07:30 CST on April 25, 2026. The check in desk will sit immediately before the zoo gates. The race start location is near the Mutual of Omaha pavilion; the race route is two laps of the zoo's main loop. Plan to enjoy a fun, family-oriented atmosphere!

    Donation & Entry Information:

A $50 participation donation permits one runner access to the race. Additionally, runners will receive a t-shirt, and are permitted to remain inside the zoo for the balance of the day at no additional cost. Spectators are allowed inside the grounds of the Zoo during the race:

    ● Spectators with or without a Henry Doorly Zoo membership may enter the zoo early to watch their loved one, after paying a fee at the zoo’s ticket kiosk. The spectator may remain inside the zoo for the balance of the day.

    Organization Information:

Donations from the 5K Gator Fun Run will benefit the Omaha Firefighters Historical Society and the Omaha Fire Union’s Cancer Benevolent Fund. The Omaha Firefighters Historical Society (OFFHS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The Omaha Fire Department was founded in 1860. The mission of the OFFHS is to accumulate, safeguard and to make available for public view - the history of the Omaha Fire Department. The OFFHS collects photographs, artifacts, textbooks, postcards, and artifacts. The OFFHS conducts interviews with firefighters, retirees, and personnel adjacent to the fire department. Pursuant to the mission, the OFFHS shares information through the publication, The Pioneer Hook & Ladder Quarterly (PH&L).

The Omaha Fire Union - Cancer Benevolent Fund is used to help defray the expenses members suffer while under-going treatment for cancer. Firefighters have a 9% higher risk of a cancer diagnosis, and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer, than the general public. The Benevolent Fund has no internal fees. Every dollar deposited will be used to assist an Omaha firefighter.
