This race has been created to honor the memory of Raeann Rose Merlino and raise funds for the Memorial Scholarship in her name.

Raeann Rose Merlino, 10, of West Pittston, departed from this world Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, after a brief battle with the flu and RSV.

Her untimely passing has left her loved ones with unimaginable sorrow in their hearts, for she was a beacon of love that effortlessly filled one with joy.

Raeann, born to Jamie Merlino and Dawn Gazda on June 25, 2012, is remembered for her energetic, caring and strong-willed personality.

She was a fifth-grade student in the Wyoming Area School District. Twirling and giggling, Rae was constantly dancing with exceptional rhythm. Her love of dance led her to cheerleading, which became a passion and outlet for her creativity and energy. Empathetic to her core, compassion for animals, especially her canine companion, Gus, was abundant in Rae.

Raeann was always eager to help, whether at the Hughestown Fire Department, the Pittston Memorial Library or her grandparents' house. She had many friends, all of whom can agree that she made life brighter for anyone lucky enough to meet her. Water was certainly her element, and most of her summers were spent swimming with family and friends. Her freckled, smiling face was an embodiment of summer, and her shining spirit a drop of sunshine on Earth.

After the race; participants are encouraged to join us for a cut, meet our fire fighters, and cheer for our winners during the awards ceremony!

Moosic Borough is thrilled to announce the second annual Move with Moosic 5k Run/Walk is scheduled for June 7, 2026 with a 9AM start time. The race will begin at the Moosic Youth Center, wind down Main Street and Minooka Avenue to Felter Field, pass by the Moosic High Alumni Memorial and Edmond Piaski Park on Elm Street, travel up Spring Street to Mary Ann Nawrocki Park, and loop back around to end with a celebration back at the Moosic Youth Center. New this year we have added a 1/4 mile kids fun run. Children ages 10 and under are welcomed to sign up for this free event which will follow the 5k.

This years event will kick off the summer in our community and all proceeds will be used to reimagine and rejuvenate our green spaces in Moosic Borough. Last year, our community came together and raised an extraordinary $45,000—and those dollars have already made a visible, lasting impact across our parks and green spaces. As we prioritize public safety, maintaining and updating our infrastructure, and ensuring our roads are clear and our garbage is picked up, the Move with Moosic 5K Run/Walk serves as a reminder to take care of our parks too.

Because of your support, more than $30,000 will be invested this April to update Edmond Piaski Park, breathing new life into a small but treasured neighborhood space in our community. We also resurfaced the basketball court at Smerdon Park, with hoop rehabilitation planned for this spring. At the Moosic Youth Center, we replaced the aging side door to improve safety and accessibility. Funds raised through the 5K also allowed us to purchase mulch for the Moosic Red Wings playground and upgrade the security cameras at Mercatili Segilia Park, strengthening safety for all who visit. In addition, through Bank of America employee volunteer grants, we supported the Moosic Little League in rehabilitating their picnic tables. These improvements are only the beginning. We are meeting with our grant‐writing partners and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to pursue a comprehensive park planning grant. Funds raised in 2026 will directly support this effort and help meet

any required matching contributions—positioning Moosic to secure significant outside funding for long‐term park revitalization.

We are blessed with numerous recreational spaces for both our residents and beyond to enjoy. Some are updated and well-loved, while others desperately need our help. By participating in our 5k as a runner, walker, sponsor, or volunteer, you will have a positive impact on our hometown. And we would be so grateful for your support in whatever capacity you are able to give back.
