BLACK HILLS VETERAN’S HONOR MARCH AND MARATHON

The Black Hills Veteran’s Honor March was conceived in 2002 as a way to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s servicemen and women. The 26.2-mile march takes place in the picturesque Black Hills National Forest on the Mickelson Trail. The March is held on a weekend at the end of September.

The March, which is conducted under the auspices of the South Dakota National Guard Enlisted Association (SDNGEA), grew out of an idea that originated from some South Dakota Army National Guard soldiers who had participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March. It was during the long ride home from White Sands, New Mexico that the idea of a commemorative march could be held to honor all Veterans and that the Black Hills would be a perfect place to hold such an event. Since the Bataan Memorial Death March takes place in late March or April, the consensus was that this new event should be held later in the year.

On September 21, 2002, seven members of the Army National Guard traveled to Deadwood, SD, and set out to reconnoiter the proposed march route and establish sites for water points, rest stops, and lodging requirements. Ted Deloy, Michael Jones, Matt Lacroix, Ben Lamp, Jeff Nord, Ben Smetana, and Mark Thomas were members of the recon team and laid the foundation for this event. The route today closely matches the original route from Rochford to Deadwood, the only change being the decision to end at the Rodeo grounds as compared to main street Deadwood.

After completing the dry run in September 2002, the marchers compiled notes and ideas. Due to mobilization in 2003, the idea had to wait to be presented to the SDNGEA at the state conference in April 2004. The decision was made to have the inaugural march start in September 2004.

Since its inception, the memorial march has grown to hundreds of marchers from across the United States. Events are offered in Team Military and Civilian, Individual Military and Civilian, Heavy Military (with a 35lb Rucksack), Marathon, Mini-March, Team Mini-March, and now 110 Mile Endurance March.

"Run for Their Lives!" is a casual and family-friendly Mother's Day 5K race/run/walk generously sponsored by Monument Health and CatholicPsych Institute.

This event is a place to gather the people that we love and participate together in memory of the ones that we are missing. It is a place to celebrate motherhood in its fullness of love, joy, gratitude, and sorrow. We invite bereaved mothers to have their children included on our list of children remembered and their names will be listed on the back of our event t-shirt. (Deadline for name submissions is April 5th)

There is no greater gift to a grieving parent than to remember their child, to say their name, and to walk beside them with a reverence for what they have lost.

    2026 Highlights:

You will be able to register as one team whether you are participating in-person or virtually.

Team captains will register first and set up a team name, then all additional members can designate themselves as part of that team.

Whether you are participating in-person or virtually, part of what makes this event fun is to connect as a community!

Join our event Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/virtualrunfortheirlives

This is where we'll share event information, photos, and a slide show of the children we are running to remember.

We would LOVE for you to share your photos of your run, your group, and your team shirts.

Tell us about the person you are running to remember and tell us a story about them!

Tell us why this event is meaningful to you!

Don't forget to tag your posts with #runfortheirlives2026

All proceeds from the event will go to support Lach's Legacy and the fight against SIDS in South Dakota. Lach's Legacy is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and works to provide comfort to newly bereaved families, SIDS and safe-sleep education, and support for SIDS-related research. Learn more about us at www.lachslegacy.org

    For Kids:

NOTE: There is special pricing of $5 off for kids 12 and under. Discount is applied at the checkout.

If you want your child to get a t-shirt, be eligible for race awards, and/or be an official member of your team then children must be registered.

If they are just along for the ride, it is not necessary to register them separately!

    In-person Participants:

Your registration includes a race t-shirt, commemorative bib number, refreshments, prizes for overall winners and medals for age-group winners! To be guaranteed your t-shirt, you must be registered by April 24th. After that t-shirts will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis. Race-day registration will also be available.
