The 5K for Kelsey Fun Run was created in honor of Kelsey Nalepa who was 8 years old when she was killed in a car accident involving a drunk driver. We want to bring awareness to the impacts of drinking and driving while raising funds for the Kelsey Nalepa Scholarship.

Come join us for a 5K fun run, food trucks, silent auction, raffle, fun activities, and more!

Event details and schedule

The event is from 5:00-8:00 PM

5:00pm - Event "opens" (pick up race bag with t-shirt, purchase raffle basket tickets, onsite registration-shirt not guaranteed).

5:30pm - Presentation of the 2026 Kelsey Nalepa Scholarships

6:00pm - The 5K Fun Run Start Time (This is family and pet friendly...dogs and strollers are welcome. The course is a combination of concrete and decomposed granite. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in three catergories...Youth (12 & Under), Teen (13-17), and Adult (18 & up)

7:30pm - Online Silent Auction Closes (you do not have to be present to win...any winner not in attendance will be contacted.)

7:45pm - Raffle Winners Announced (You do not have to be present to win...any winner not in attendance will be contacted. Please make sure your name and phone number are on each raffle ticket!)

Event FAQs:

  • Location: Hometown Heroes Park (1001 E. League City Parkway, League City, TX 77573)

  • Tickets: Tickets will be sold at the event for raffle baskets. Tickets are $1.00 each. WE ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCEPT CREDIT/DEBIT CARD PAYMENTS AT THE EVENT! Please be prepared to pay with cash or via Venmo app.

  • Food Trucks: Food trucks will be onsite and donating a percentage of their sales to the Kelsey Nalepa Scholarship Fund. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ACCEPT CREDIT/DEBIT CARD PAYMENTS!

  • Silent Auction: The online silent auction will end at 7:30. All winners are expected to render payment once the bidding is finalized (Cash, Venmo, or a check made payable to: Kelsey Nalepa Scholarship Fund, are acceptable forms of payment for the silent auction).

    This program is under the direction of Patrick Zarate who has over 26 years of collegiate and high school coaching experience. Coach Zarate has coached at the collegiate level for 13 years, six of which he was the Head Coach (Texas Lutheran University).

    Coach Zarate is entering his 15th year coaching at Pearland Dawson High School.

    Coach Zarate was named the NCAA National Coach of the Year and NCAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2008 as well as the American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Coach Zarate is USATF Level 1 and 2 certified and is USATF Cross Country Specialist certified.

    While at Dawson, Coach Zarate has coached six athletes to the UIL State XC Championships that have raced in the State meet 13 times and 10 athletes to the UIL State Track & Field Championships. Coach Zarate has assisted with 16 district team championships and over 50 individual district champions, over 30 area champions, and over 10 regional and state qualifiers.

    Coach Zarate was inducted into the Texas Lutheran University Hall of Fame in 2019 for his accomplishments while coaching there.

    While the head coach at Texas Lutheran University, Coach Zarate’s teams have accomplished:

    -3 NCAA National Championships

    -6 ASC Team Championships

    -53 NCAA All-American honors

    -64 ASC Individual Champions
