What is Ekiden?
Ekiden is a long-distance relay race originating in Japan. Instead of passing a baton, runners pass a traditional sash called a tasuki from one teammate to the next. The format emphasizes teamwork, perseverance, and collective effort over individual glory.
The first official ekiden was held in Japan in 1917, inspired by ancient communication routes where messengers relayed information from station to station.

The Race
Each member of a team of four runners completes one 2.2 mile lap each around the iconic WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca.
At the end of each lap, runners pass the tasuki to their next teammate, continuing the relay tradition that defines ekiden racing.
Create a Team. Challenge Another.
Teachers, coworkers, families, running clubs, restaurants, alumni groups, Aquarium volunteers, CHOMP nurses, or completely ridiculous costume teams are all encouraged. During registration, teams may issue an official challenge to another team in the race. Winning challenge teams receive bonus raffle entries and eternal bragging rights.
Our Goals
Monterey Ekiden supports Japanese cultural exchange opportunities for local students.
Proceeds benefit the Wasshoi Foundation and the Monterey High School Cross Country Exchange Boosters, organizations that help students deepen their understanding of Japanese language and culture through travel and educational exchange.
