Time: Sunday April 12th, 2026 - 7:00 AM (Gates Open) 8:00 AM (Race Start)

Location: 303 Main Street, Greely High School, Cumberland Center, ME US 04021

KyleCares is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting open and honest communication about the mental health challenges experienced by teens and young adults in today’s society. Ultimately, the organization aims to eliminate student self-harm and suicide by creating school environments where students and their caregivers have the confidence and support to seek help without shame or hesitation. Last fall Greely High School started the 2nd chapter in Maine, Active Minds/KyleCares Club, and we focus on our community smashing the stigma of mental health, conveying that it’s ok not to be ok, and having a safe environment to talk about struggles. There are so many reasons this suicide and mental health awareness club is vital to our school and community. We look forward to networking with nearly 700 Active Minds chapters in all 50 states. In the past 5 years KyleCares has helped start 38 chapters in 3 states - MASS, MAINE & RHODE ISLAND.

Our club feels that the importance of focusing on the mental health of teenagers is crucial, as this developmental state is set apart by numerous challenges and transitions. Research shows that this generation of Adolescents often face academic pressures, social expectations, identity exploration, family discord, world events, traumatic events, hormonal changes, and so much more which can contribute to stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Our club feels that addressing these concerns is absolutely imperative for the overall well-being and success of teenagers. Organizations like Active Minds/KyleCares Club play a vital role in supporting the mental health of teens. There is no question that there are so many positive reasons to focus on teen mental health in the formative years and how the role of our Active Minds/KyleCares Club is so vital to spreading awareness. Studies also show that early intervention and prevention is first and foremost. By addressing mental health issues

early on, organizations like KyleCares contribute to preventing more severe problems in the future. The hope is that early intervention and normalizing "it's ok not to be ok", which can help teens develop coping mechanisms and resilience. Our club has received nothing but the best advice, support, and guidance from Jim Johnson, President of KyleCares, father of Kyle. He has been an outstanding collaborator and liaison to help our club.

We all know that adolescence is a critical period for social and emotional development. The heart of the Active Minds/KyleCares Club at Greely focuses on building social skills, fostering positive relationships, providing resources, offering school/ community programming, and provides a safe space for teens to express themselves collaboratively and without judgment, and ultimately aims to create a supportive environment within our school. By promoting open discussions and awareness, our students contribute to creating a culture where seeking help is seen as a positive and courageous step. Normalizing "it's ok not to be ok".

With the continued collaboration with multiple organizations it has not only benefited our high school students but has also extended to younger grades (4-8), fostering a comprehensive approach to mental health education. The impact of Minding Your Mind speakers/ assemblies at Greely High School have had a profound impact on both students and staff. The programming has facilitated:

Enhanced Awareness: Students and staff have gained valuable insights into mental health issues, particularly regarding suicide prevention, anxiety and stress management.

Emotional Connection: Participants expressed feeling more connected and empathetic towards those facing mental health challenges, leading to a supportive community environment.

Broadened Reach: The inclusion of grades 4-8 in the programming highlights the importance of addressing mental health early in students' developmental journeys.

Feedback from attendees indicates that these experiences have been eye-opening and have motivated many to engage in further discussions about mental health.

    Key accomplishments include:

Comprehensive Programming: The initiative has successfully reached younger students, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and education.

Future Expansion: The club aims to broaden its focus beyond suicide, anxiety and stress to encompass a wider range of mental health issues affecting youth today. Continued collaboration with Minding Your Mind will be crucial in achieving this goal and enhancing outreach efforts and possible through donor sponsorship that funds these essential programming events!

Unique Approach and Implementation at Greely High School has distinguished itself through its innovative approach to mental health education. The involvement of students in the planning and execution of programming is particularly noteworthy:

Engagement: The Active Minds/KyleCares Club has demonstrated exceptional engagement, setting a model for other high schools and colleges in New England. This active participation fosters a sense of ownership and commitment among students.Transition to True Engagement: The focus on skill-building and youth engagement represents a significant shift from traditional mental health education, creating a more impactful and lasting change in the school culture.

Our programming efforts toward mental health awareness at Greely High School has made a significant impact on the student body and staff. By fostering early intervention and comprehensive programming, we are paving the way for a more informed and supportive community. As we look to the future, the Active Minds/KyleCares Club remains committed to expanding our outreach and addressing a wider array of mental health issues. Together, with your support, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students.

Thank you for being a part of our 2nd annual Mental Health Matters 5k. We are ever so grateful for your contribution, participation and support!
