At 7:40 PM on Tuesday and Friday evenings, W/E Running Club comes alive across Tokyo's scattered training grounds. Koichi founded the crew in May 2023 to fill a gap in Tokyo's running culture: a space between casual weekend jogs and the brutality of university athletics programs. The roughly 200 members, drawn from office workers training for their first marathon and experienced runners chasing personal bests, gather at rotating venues including Oda Field, Yoyogi Park, the Imperial Palace loop, and Yumenoshima Stadium. The philosophy is refreshingly simple: no membership fees, no complicated signup, just show up and run twice a week. Training sessions blend tempo runs with moderate pacing, adapting to who arrives. Post-run cooldowns are brief, designed so members can disperse into Tokyo's night. Community builds through shared miles and consistent attendance rather than forced social events.
