The course starts on Payne Street and heads up what locals affectionately call No Payne No Gain Hill, a steep incline, before turning right onto Spring St. Spring Street is a decline where you can pick up some speed before coming back up towards Hamilton Street, turning right and then left onto Colgate's campus. The Daniel Barden Mudfest was created in memory of Daniel Barden, one of the first-grade students whose life was taken during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December 2012.

The event was founded by family members whose niece was inside the school that day. While she escaped unharmed, she lost her dear friend Daniel. In the face of unimaginable loss, Mudfest was born as a way to honor Daniel’s life and carry forward the values he embodied.

Daniel is remembered as a kind and gentle child who treated everyone with respect and joy. He had a zest for life and loved the outdoors, sports, and getting muddy. Those simple joys are at the heart of Mudfest.
