Bellmore Junior Girl Scout Troop #933 invites you to join them in the inaugural "Log Off and Lace Up One-Mile Fun Walk and Run"!

Meet us at Randy Lane Park in South Bellmore for a fun morning on Screen Free Saturday! (Saturday, May 9th).

RACE BEGINS at 8:30AM so arrive early to allow time to park and get settled! Music and pre-race festivities begin at 8am! Race Day Registrations begin at 8am!

An untimed one-mile walk/run will kick off at 8:30am, heading east on Randy Lane to Legion Street, then south on Legion, around the peninsula as it turns into Shore Road. The route will follow Shore Road heading north, turning right onto Randy Lane and finishing where the race began!

We will have music and good times from 8am until 10am at Randy Lane Park, with pastries, snacks, coffee and drinks for sale. All proceeds will go toward helping to cover the costs of our inaugural event!

So, tell me more... what is this all about?!

Troop 933, made up of Shore Road School 5th graders, chose to put together this event as part of their Bronze Award project, one of the three highest honors that a Girl Scout can earn. The Bronze Award challenges girls to identify an issue they care about, learn more about it, and take lasting action to create change. After reflecting on what matters to them, the troop decided to tackle a topic that affects nearly everyone — our societies' (and notably children's) over-reliance on screens!

We discovered Screen-Free Week, (www.screenfree.org) a global initiative that encourages individuals and families to unplug and reconnect - to take a break from screens and connect with others while enjoying time outdoors! The girls chose to bring this movement to our own community by organizing this one-mile walk/run on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Randy Lane Park.

Our goal is to inspire our community to get active, have fun together, and challenge everyone to take this day to try and step away from screens for the day!

DID YOU KNOW...???

  • School-age children spend more time with screens (tv, video games, computers, tablets and phones) than any other activity but sleeping?? That adds up to 114 full days of screen time each year!

  • More screen time = more stress! Kids on screens 4+ hours a day are twice as likely to feel anxious.

  • Bright light keeps brains busy! Screens before bedtime can make it harder to fall asleep.

  • More screen time means less time for playing and moving our bodies.

  • Kids who are heavy screen users often feel less connected to real-life friends.

  • Studies show too much screen time links to anxiety, sadness, anger, and low confidence.

  • Lots of daily screen time can make it harder to focus or sit still. break time helps!

  • Good habits start early! 68% of teens bring their devices to bed, and nearly a third fall asleep with their phones.

  • Because of risks linked to cyberbullying, anxiety, depression and addictive use, Australia recently became the first country to ban children under 16 from using major social media platforms. Other countries are considering similar bans.

  • In the USA, families are currently suing meta, saying apps like Instagram were designed to be addictive for kids and may cause mental health issues.

In 1993 the Nasau Police Running Club held a 5K run in memory of Nassau County Police Officer Gary R. Farley who tragically died in the line of duty. PO Farley was the first officer to lose his life in the line of duty since the inception of the Nassau Police Running Club in 1980.

Since 1993, the Nassau County Police has tragically lost many additional members who were serving the people they were sworn to protect.

The Nassau Police Running Club has vowed to ensure that these officers lives would not be lost in vain and the club is committed to making sure all members and their families know that we will never forget the sacrifice their loved ones have endured.

The Nassau County Police Officer Memorial Run is held annually and proceeds from the Nassau Police Officer Memorial Run will be used to present scholarships in the names of our fallen officers. These scholarships will be presented to graduating high school seniors attending secondary education and who are involved in their schools running clubs.
