5k Run Virtual Walk

Sat, March 21, 2026

Harris Road Middle School

Concord NC

Sarcoma Sucks....but together we can do something about it. Help us take the fight to sarcoma, which is a rare but very aggressive form of cancer that impacts 1% of adult cancers and 15 to 20% of childhood cancers.

Not enough is known about sarcoma, which has no cure, and treatment development is underfunded. Research is badly needed to provide breakthroughs that lead to better outcomes for patients. 17,000 people will be diagnosed with sarcoma each year. We need more Sarcoma Survivors - and that starts with us!

This unique run/walk is in memory of three family members we have lost to forms of sarcoma - Jenny Harman, a beloved mother of two that lost her battle three years ago. Last year, we also lost her uncle, Jeff Grose, to another form of this terrible disease. Jenny’s grandmother, Faye Grose, also passed from a rare form of sarcoma. This fight is very personal for our family!

Jenny found sarcoma for years, including treatment that left her without pain-free mobility and robbed her of independence. We wanted to create an event where we could celebrate what a gift it is to be able to move our bodies - a gift we often take for granted.

We are partnering with the Charlotte-based Move For Jenn Foundation, which has many of the same values as Sarcoma Sucks – including a mantra of Being the Light, something we have focused on in the wake of Jenny’s passing; trying to keep the light she brought to the world going strong.

Our goal is to raise to $25,000 (Move for Jenn will also raise $25,000) to fund a clinical sarcoma trial at Levine Cancer Center in Charlotte. These kinds of trials are what will eventually lead to more effective ways to treat sarcoma.

Sarcoma Sucks will have a standard 5k track of 3.1 miles with chip timing by Start2Finish, but Jenny's birthday was March 20 (3.20 if you'll go with me on this) - so we will work a little harder and push a little further, just as she did in her fight. We are asking all participants to complete the standard 5k track and finish with a 0.1 mile Memorial Walk. That makes our total 3.20 miles to honor Jenny's birthday, as well as the start of Spring and the new hope that comes with it!

We also welcome virtual participation via the Sleep-In Supporter option, which can be as creative as you want it to be! You can either set up a team with fundraising goals or donate individually and move 3.20 miles however you see fit from wherever you are. Wear a fun outfit (make sure you have on some yellow for Sarcoma Awareness), take pictures, have fun, and share them to our pages on social media using #sarcomasucks.

Sarcoma does indeed Suck. Let's join together to fight it and help create more Sarcoma Survivors!

Course Distance: 250 YARD SWIM – 8 MILE BIKE – 2 MILE RUN

Swim: Your event kicks off with a 250 yard swim in the beautiful and spacious aquatic facility of the Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics. Participants will exit through the side door of the building and take a short run to the transition area. Swimmers will be self seeded according to the swim ability chart. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with lining up for the swim. You will be provided with a swim cap if you choose to wear it. After the swim, you'll experience the exhilaration of exiting the pool to the sound of cheers as you make your way to the transition area.

Bike: The bike course is a 8 mile, 1 loop course. Yes, there are hills, but you can do this!

Run: Runners will exit the Transition Area and run up and down Verhoeff Drive (closed to traffic) as well as around the Huntersville Athletic Park. There will be an aid station positioned at Mile 1 just before your second loop. You’ll be able to cheer and high five your fellow participants on the 2 loop course.

Whether you've never heard of adventure racing or are a seasoned pro looking for a partial-day challenge, this event is for you.

WHAT: 3rd Annual “Neck of the Woods” Adventure Race (5-hour). Solo or teams of up to 4 persons (1,2,3 or 4 on a team)

WHEN: October 24th, 2026 0700 mandatory pre-race briefing, 0730 launch time, must finish by 1230

    WHERE: Huntersville, NC

    COST: $40/person

This adventure race will be like a scavenger hunt on bike and on foot (no paddle/swim/water section). That doesn't necessarily mean you won't get wet.

All maps are preplotted with possible checkpoints to find. Each checkpoint you find earns you points. The team/solo with the most points in the least amount of time wins (Solo & Team category awards). All mandatory checkpoints and most of the other checkpoints are easily found near paths/creeks/intersections/features. A few optional checkpoints may be a little trickier to find. Team members stay together and work together the entire race. You can choose to go all out and attempt every checkpoint OR you can just get the mandatory checkpoints OR any number of checkpoints between. There is a 5-hour time limit. There is no set route. There is no sequence to the checkpoints. You decide your route and manage your own time. This can be by yourself, with your family, your friends, your coworkers, etc (teams of 1-4).

Mandatory Supplies for each participant: Bike, Bike Helmet, blinking rear bike light, Food/Nutrition, Water

Mandatory Team Supplies carried at all times: Compass, Phone (waterproof container)

Distances are approximate and depend on your race strategy. However, teams that make it to every checkpoint and bonus point with no navigation errors should plan on about 25 miles of biking and 5-6 miles of trekking. The minimum distance if you only get the mandatory checkpoints is about 14-15 miles of biking and 3-4 miles of trekking. The miles are not continuous as the race has separate sections and you are constantly navigating and renegotiating routes.

You will be responsible for your own nutrition and hydration throughout the race. There will be a transition area with water and Gatorade, but will obviously not be accessible while you are out hunting for checkpoints.

The bike sections are mostly paved roads and greenways with some optional riding along power lines and fire roads. A mountain bike would work best. However, if you only have (or need to borrow from a friend) a road bike or even a beach cruiser, you can ride to all the mandatory bike points. The optional bike points will need some strategic creativity if you don't have a bike that can ride off road. Helmets and blinking bike lights are required at all times while on the bikes.

There are always race day surprises as part of the fun, but here are a couple hints to the day. There will be more than one map. You will have to earn each of your maps at different times throughout the race. Some of the farther checkpoints marked as “bonus” will have descriptions of possible bonus points you can find close by. New this year: A non-mandatory orienteering section worth lots of points...practice basic compass skills and estimating distance to stay competitive. Here is a video to show you how easy it will be:

    Compass Heading

TRAINING TIPS: Get some miles on the bike you will be using for the race. Get some foot miles on a trails or gravel paths. On your training rides and runs, carry the pack you will use for water and nutrition at the event. Practice transitioning from miles on a bike to miles on foot and vice versa. Know how to read a compass (basic North, East, South & West for most points AND headings/distances for maximum points).
