The Light up the Sky 5K Run/Walk will be returning this year for its 10th year! Join the fun on Sunday, May 24th. All net proceeds support the annual 4th of July fireworks held at the Presque Isle State Harbor.

There is a fun run for the kids at 9:00 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. Both events start at the New Presque Isle Lighthouse Park. Registration fees for the 5k is $20 through April 30th and $25 thereafter. Registration fees for the kid fun run is $10. The first 150 finishers in the 5k will receive a medal and the first 50 finishers in the kid fun run will receive a medal. A limited supply of special design t-shirts will be available at a cost of $15 and you must register and purchase by April 30th to guarantee receiving a shirt. When they are gone they are gone.

Online registration is available through May 22, 2026 (the Friday before the race). Participants can sign up on the day of the race between 8:30-9:20 a.m. (CASH ONLY).

Participants will be able to pick-up their packets on the day of the race between 8:30-9:20 a.m.

    Run. Walk. Honor. Join us as we remember our sister Ryan Marie Szymanski who passed away from congenital heart defects in July 2006. She is our reason for all that we do and we invite you to celebrate your reason and loved ones with us.

    Please wear red or blue in support of congenital heart defects awareness.

    All proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital of Michigan pediatric cardiology unit where Ryan was treated. Donations are greatly appreciated, please make checks payable to United Way-Run United or donate through this page. All race costs are incurred by the Szymanski family to support the vision of our race and make the greatest impact.

    Set in beautiful Northeast Michigan, the Aliferis Memorial Race is open to runners, walkers and bikers of all ages and ability levels. It is named in memory of long-time Alpena Pathologist Dr. Peter Aliferis. Dr. Aliferis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and joined the hospital in 1963, serving for many years as the pathologies and laboratory director. He touched the lives of many in our community during his 37-year tenure. This race is a celebration of his steadfast dedication to health and wellness.

    All proceeds will benefit the Peter Aliferis Scholarship Fund, the Cancer Center and patient enhancement projects and new technology at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.

    Registration and material distribution on the morning of the race is located on the campus of MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, under the big tent on the corner of Chisholm/US-23 and Johnson Street. Check in begins at 7:00 am and continues until events begin.
