Hike Volcan Mountain Wilderness Reserve

5 miles out and back | Moderate| Elevation Gain 1,230 feet | Julian, CA

Volcan Mountain Trail is located near the old mining town of Julian. The trail follows an old road to the summit and this pleasant day hike provides excellent vistas. There is little shade along this route, so come prepared with sun protection and plenty of water. If you want to make this a loop, consider taking the Five Oaks Trail on the way up or down and enjoy a change a scenery.

Safety Tips: Shade is extremely limited on this trail. Wear lightweight non-cotton clothing and head covering (HAT) is required. Use sunblock. Must carry 1-2L of water, coupled with electrolyte tablets. Wear a trail shoe with good traction. Bring a small backpack to carry your water, snacks, and other hiking essentials. Trekking poles recommended if you have them. Come prepared with a fully charged cellphone and notify staff of any allergies or injuries they should be aware of for this difficult hike. Be sure to hydrate the day before as well.
