Catamount Ultra is an ultra event.
About the event
A challenging half and full marathon distance trail run in the heart of the Green Mountains at beautiful Trapp Family Lodge. Fall is the best time to visit Vermont and we think that running through crisp, colorful, fall foliage on the Trapp Lodge trail system is just the way to do it. October is a particularly special time to be in Stowe, winter is just around the corner and Oktoberfest is in full swing in and around town.
About the course
This race will challenge you! Although Trapp lodge has some of the smoothest, most runnable trail around for running, they also boast some incredible single track. Steep climbs and descents and a newly updated climb to the highest point on the Trapp Lodge Property; Round Top Mountain! The 13.1 mile loop course is approximately 2/3 double track wide trails and dirt roads, and 1/3 serpentine, rugged single track. Full marathon racers will traverse this loop twice. This is a challenging trail race with significant elevation gain and loss and some steep scrambling segments.

The Course...
~11 miles , ~5,000' vertical gainWhen you pack in around 5,000' of elevation gain on some of the most challenging terrain in the Northeast, you know you're in for an adventure. The race starts from the base of Stowe Mountain Resort and climbs Mozo (Mt. Mansfield) via the Haselton Trail, threading through spur trails before dropping into Underhill on the far side. A brief stretch on more forgiving terrain offers a moment to recover before starting up the Sunset Ridge Trail which will demand everything you have left. Once you reach the Long Trail you'll quickly transition to more rugged spur trails that will carry you toward the final descent back down the Stowe side via Rimrock and Perry Merrill.Don't mistake this for a trail half-marathon with a hill or two. This course requires real mountain running experience, comfort with steep, relentless climbing and descending, and the ability to move confidently on exposed, technical terrain. At 11 miles, it's one of the most consistently brutal stretches of trail in the region. This race will humble you, break you open, and send you home with mud on your face and blood on knees. If you are looking for a challenge... You've found it!
Event Capacity
This event is limited to just 70 runners. The high alpine terrain on which we'll be racing is delicate and all racers must remain on the trail at all times. DO NOT attempt to go off trail to pass or avoid members of the public who may be out enjoying a morning hike. Violations will result in disqualification.
Start Times
For 2026 we've removed the qualifying time requirements, meaning anyone who is up for the challenge is welcome to toe the line. An Early Start option is now available at 6:00 AM for runners anticipating the need for more time on the course. The official start begins at 6:30 AM, with staggered waves of 10 departing every 10 minutes through 7:30 AM. Wave placement is determined by UltraSignup Rank, or most recent race time if no rank available.
